i'd like to apologize for brother camping, which should actually be the job of his church, but since they don't seem to act i guess a more distant member of the body should do just as well. Harrold is of very advanced age and probably more than a bit confused. Add to that a recent stroke, which makes introspection an almost impossible task and can have lead to a very weird internal logic, especially if that logic has been rather queer already before.

As such, brother camping is a very old man with a debilitating codition, and it s reasonable to conclude that his utterings are no diffdrent in their weight than those of any other man in the same situation.

Frankly, i find it rather cruel from the media to mock an old man on what most certainy is his deathbed, even if that mockery might seem deserved from harrolds past actions. Let's just let him die in peace. His personal judgement day is certainly near.

I'm having trouble reading past the sarcasm this time, so just to be clear - this is a joke, right?

Might want to include the [/sarcasm] tag next time...

Doesn't look like it to me. In fact, "oh come on, why can't you just let insane people spread their insanity?" seems to be the prevailing sentiment.

See the Mayan's were wrong after all !
Anybody knows a 90 yr old Right wing Christian fanatic knows more than a ancient culture right ???

Anybody knows that both a 90 yr old Right wing Christian fanatic and an ancient culture know better than modern day astronomers! I mean, those stupid astrophysicists. They can't even figure out why the universe is accelerating its expansion!!! Pfft, I bet the Mayans knew.

If the world does indeed end on the 21st, I shall celebrate it by living my life as if it were any other day. And if it doesn't end, I shall celebrate it by living my life as if it were any other day.

It is a win-win situation.

Sorry, no. Even while i heavily disagree with harold camping and would rather that he shut up in the first place, i still consider him a brother in christ, although i must assume that he would most probably not return the favour. Said brother is by now in a condition where he cannot really speak for himself anymore, and i think it would be kindest to accept the fact that if he ever was of sound mind, he now certainly isn't anymore, and should therefore not get any more attention or condemnation than any other old man babling nonsense.

I'm also a bit disapointed of his church, that they don't seize their responsibility in this situation.

You know, to be fair, if some guy truely has lost it and he's on his deathbed, that's one thing. But this guy hasn't always been on his deathbed and I believe he has been saying stuff like this for quite some time... :uhh:

But do you really want to strangle his free speech? Ok, sure nonsense like this is annoying... but I am not sure whether I am more annoyed by it, or the nonsense that is created from it by others.

Good grief people, the world has no higher chance of ending on 21/10/11 than it does on January 16th or August 5th. And if Harold Camping thinks it does, good for him. If he thinks that everyone other than Quran-burning, gay-hating, child-beating zealots are unholy heathens and will be raptured into Hell, good for him.

But if people keep on giving stuff like this a particular kind of attention, some could sure say the blame of annoyance and stupidity lies with them, I'm afraid...

The same goes for the whole 2012 thing. But come on, everyone thinks it's a huge big joke now- even the people I know who believe 'something' will happen in 2012, do not adhere to some sort of Emmerich-type disaster sequence...

There's only one reason and one reason only that he's doing this. Money. Every time he predicts an "End of days", his radio station gets flooded with cash from idiots who believe him. His station made a couple million from that last Rapture date.

Here and now
First, a disclaimer - I am an agnostic who neither believes that God exists, or believes that he doesn't. I just don't know, and it wouldn't change the way I live my life either way, so I just don't worry about it.

I have long been fascinated by the "End of Times" stuff in the Bible, and I gotta say that for a preacher this guy sure doesn't know his stuff.

First, he says that it's too late to repent - yet the bible clearly states that you CAN repent - even after the rapture, unless you willingly bear the "Mark of the Beast". So his idea that Judgement day has come and gone is pure B.S.

Second, the rapture is NOT the end of the world. It is followed by a period of "tribulations" during which 90% of the "left-behind" are killed. That period lasts several months, I forget exactly how long. After that is the Second Coming of Christ, and everyone who isn't in Hell gets to live in a millenium of absolute peace and plentitude - including all the dead or raptured believers, who will be resurrected so they can enjoy the "as it is in heaven it shall be on earth" happily ever after stuff.

The list goes on.

Even that "Rapture Index" has it wrong - several of it's "symptoms" aren't supposed to occur until AFTER the Rapture, and it misses a few of the key signs that the apocolypse is near.

I mean, really, if you are going to believe in that stuff, you should at least get it right.

The earth will either end by a really massive meteorit impact, or before the sun enters the red giant phase which I think will be the most likely event. It would be cool to watch this from another planet by the way, because it will be a hell of a big show. But it's a few billion years away from now.

However, life on earth will disappear way earlier, likely due to human activity.

So, that's your answer for him? "It's ok, he's just crazy."

No, I don't think he is. I think he's well aware of what he did and what he's doing. His advertising campaign for the end of the world clearly shows it. Yes, that's right, he put FamilyRadio.com on the ads.

Your reaction is typical and exactly the same as that of many people for every judgement day prediction in history: "Oh, Harold Camping is a crazy old man and got the date wrong, but hell on Earth has yet to come and those who believe will be saved and those who don't will be tortured forever!!!"

If faith is going to survive, it needs to shed itself of the archaic rituals, fear mongering and organized religion.

So, that's your answer for him? "It's ok, he's just crazy."

No. He's not crazy, but right now, he's severly debilitiated. I know stroke patients rather well. It is even typical that he renews his efforts instead of asking himself wheather he might be on the wrong track. It takes decades for stroke patients to re-develop the ability of introspection (quite frankly, they have severe trouble with learning anything new).

As such, I'm not talking about his actions from the past. I'm talking about right now, and yes, I think he doesn't really have anymore choice in the matter after the stroke. It's utterly pointless to give him a platform in this state. Granted, he has one of his own that he's using, and as I said, it would be the responsibility of his church and family to stop him already. But I think it's pretty pointless for the media to further report on his claims.

"Oh, Harold Camping is a crazy old man and got the date wrong, but hell on Earth has yet to come and those who believe will be saved and those who don't will be tortured forever!!!"

I can't remember having made claims as expressed in the second half of that sentence anywhere.

If faith is going to survive, it needs to shed itself of the archaic rituals, fear mongering and organized religion.

I definitaley agree on the second one. The first one isn't really the point, as rituals are closely interlinked with tradition, and are different for pretty much every church, and let's face it, most people need some kind of ritual (not just religious). Wheather or not they are archaic isn't so important, as long as it doesn't involve virgin sacrifises or similiar, I think. And while I would welcome the third, I'm not sure it's realistic. Everything that starts disorganiced gets organised at one point sooner or later. This kind of "reversed social entropy" isn't particular to religion, we meet it everywhere, and I think there's just no force we can put against it. It's very human.

And I think my main motivation for posting my original post has been a bit misunderstood. My main priority was not to accuse the media (they do what they do, wheather it might make sense or not), nor was it to defend the faith as such. It was honestly trying to say:

"Sorry this kind of stuff hapens all the time, we're trying to get better. This one in particular, I'm afraid, won't get any better, but I think he's far beyond a state where his statements could have any representative value, but I'm still sorry to say that we're handling the situation rather poorly."

Hmmm, maybe I should have put it that way right from the start... :shifty:

On the other hand, of course, my statements don't really have any representative value either, which is why I would have prefered his church to take action.

But my yogurt doesn't expire until December...

The defective gene that compulsive gamblers have is the same gene that religious fanatics have; no matter how many times reality proves them wrong, their belief is unshakable. Just like a compulsive gambler believes his bet will come in, the religious fanatics believe that God will deliver them to eternal happiness.

Their condition is incurable, it happened in my mother's day, my grandmother's day and her mother's day and so on until the beginning of religion and civilization.

The world will not end this Friday. In fact it's going to be a very nice day, like May 21st was. So go to the cinema, get together a picnic, do anything other than worry.

"A bad tree cannot bear good fruit," Jesus said, "It must be cut down and cast into the fire."

Yes, a lot of people have been apologizing for poor ol' Harold over the years. Too bad people's lives are still ruined because of his actions. But hey, at least *someone* *somewhere* is sorry.

Why believe some people him? his say that every time, and it comes NOT out.

And why we need a ''end of the world'' date, every day can it be the end of the world.

So when comes the next ''end of the world'' date? 22 October?
