Ares 1X is nothing like the real Ares. The propellant will be different, the first stage seperation environment will be different.

Just about everything will be wrong Ares 1X compared to Ares 1. It's akin to launching a Saturn 1B to wrangle the bugs out of a Titan IIIC!

Heck, even the pad will be different! The estimated cost for this PR stunt is about $450 million! You could get another shuttle flight for that!

If Ares 1X turns bad, don't expect NASA to lose any sleep over it as it doesn't represent the real Ares 1 in any way, shape or form.

What kind of propellant is going to be used in the true Ares? I thought it was a 5 segment version of the SRB with an interstage?

I think it's great that NASA is working on developing a new manned launcher. I really think that the Delta IV heavy could carry the Orion capsule into space. Maybe someone with more knowledge could tell me why that wasn't seriously considered. It seems that it is about the correct size. It is able to carry the weight of the Orion. Why wouldn't they use this currently-existing tech to launch this thing even sooner than 2015?

Because the Space Shuttle is the only vehicle that can bring up large unpressuized Orbital Replacement Units(ORUs), like new ammonia tanks, nitrogen tanks, CMGs, MBSUs, SSRMS ORUs etc.

Once the shuttle stops flying, you're going to lose that capability. So if a CMG fails when teh shuttle is retired that's it, no more CMGs so you're just awaiting the next failure you can't do anything about.

The ATV is also capable of transporting a CMG.
