I have been working on my version of the "Orbiter Universe" for some time now, and have everything working relatively well. I recently installed the World of 2001 package and everything works great except for the main spacecraft, the Orion. When I click on the Orion or any of it's constituent configurations, it crashes to a black and white screen, with no Orbiter log input.
I have tried several "clean" downloads, with the same results;everything works except the Orion!
Since the Orion seems to be the centerpiece of this addon, I would appreciate any input as to whether anyone else has had a problem with it, and what was needed to correct the problem.
I have a number of other addons, and for the most part they all work great!!
Thanks In Advance,

Stevcast

Hi,
can you post the scenario that doesn work?

To the.punk,
If you have a copy of the world of 2001, any scenario that has any element of the Orion spacecraft doesn't work. I've tried changing the scenario files, but I really can't figure out why it won't work when everything else in the download works perfectly.
I downloaded this file from avsim. Since I am a complete novice when it comes to posting and sharing files and information, please forgive my lack of computer savy, but I would appreciate any helpful insight or solutions you could offer.

Thanks,

I would first recommend re-installing in the hope that you have a corrupted download in some way. That would be the easiest answer.

Failing that,

Can you run a scenario with a Titov V?

Code-wise, the Orion and Titov are essentially identical. The only differences are in the mesh, the utterly trivial referencing of different .cfg files...and the textures.

The Titov V textures are 512x512, but the biggest Orion III texture is 1024x1024. Is it possible this is asking too much of your video card?

To Sputnik,
It's 2 A.M. in the morning, I can't sleep, and I firmly believe that my computer has developed an artificial schizophrenic personality!! I just now ran a scenario (Titov V over Soviet Battle Group), and for the most part it worked flawlessly with one exception; the "Pan-AmOrion III:2001/OrionIII" appeared as a pitch black silhouette.
This is the first time in dozens of attempts (i.e., running various scenarios) that the Orion vessel has even remotely appeared, and now I have one that appeared, and another that is "camera shy". I took your suggestion and downloaded a clean copy of the file, and I don't know if that had any bearing on whether or not the Orion materialized, but at least it seems I'm headed in the right direction.
Question: The Titov V worked perfectly (a beautiful ship by the way), and the Orion III that did show up also seemed to work fine, but when I tried a different scenario with the same configuration for the Orion III, I had the dreaded "Zebra Crash" (i.e., crash to a black and white screen with no recourse but to use Alt, Ctrl, Del, to exit ).
I'll be the first to admit that I am far from being a computer wiz, and as a matter of fact, some times I feel fortunate that my computer does anything that I ask it to do at all. I do, however, appreciate the help that I am receiving from everybody in the Orbiter community, so I'll keep plugging away at it, and hopefully I can figure out the rest of this problem. If you can think of anything else that may help resolve this, please let me know. I think that the 2001 "world" is a great piece of work, and I really want to see how the rest of it operates when everything is working properly.

Thanks,

Stevcast,

Welcome, and thanks for the kind words. From what you're describing, it sounds like the 1024-pixel textures are causing crashes in your video card. Two solutions:

1) Get a new video card
2) Downgrade your textures to half the size.

For the latter, you'd probably need a copy of Photoshop and the .dds plug-in. (I no longer have a working copy, though I used to). Then re-size all the .dds'es in the Textures/2001 directory that are over 512 in one dimension.
