Challenge AMSO High Speed Reentry

After launching at the planned time, and the crew of Apollo 16 changed their minds about their destination, and went for a Venus flyby instead. Now after a year and half in space they're almost home, they just need to re-enter... at over 14km/s.

Requires AMSO http://www.acsoft.ch/AMSO/amso.html
Make any adjustments you want, then eject the service module by pressing Ctrl+J, then J.

For the full flight just launch the Apollo 16 scenario in AMSO and complete your TVI by the end of the day.

(For an extra challenge I think you can line up a Mars flyby on the way back.)

Either that or try aerobreaking in the Earth's atmosphere if you have the propellant left to do it. On the first past, go just deep enough to lose enough velocity to get you into a highly elliptical orbit and then drop a little more velocity with each pass until you are able to safely re-enter.

That's what I was trying to do, but I can't get below escape velocity without burning up. It took me about 20 tries to do it at 14km/s, I doubt it can be done at 22, but I'd love to see someone prove me wrong!

I tried a little too late - the SM seperated during the reentry. However, I did observe that the CM would skip out of the atmosphere into an elliptical "orbit" that takes it back into the atmosphere...

You can change the AOA to apply negative lift to keep the capsule down around 50km. Go much lower before you scrub off speed and you'll burn up.

I don't have the AMSO loaded but thought I would play with trajectories to see if a tour could be done with less encounter speed back at Earth. Found a tour of EVEEJSE with final Earth encounter speed of around 13.3 km/s. The TransX plan is in this deltaglider scenario set up a couple of minutes before the Apollo 16 launch. Haven't flown it but it looks fairly straightforward.
[edit] Noticed that in moving the launch time to actual time the date of eject was a bit off. I repaired this error and cleaned up the initial eject values with cleanup also of all slings. The repaired scenario is below the first one.

I went ahead and flew it. The arrival back at Earth had an encounter speed of about 11km/s which translated to a bit over 15 km/sec at the Pe. Here's a screen cap of arriving. (click to enlarge)

What was interesting was on the initial departure from Earth, the trajectory on takeoff had a great view of the moon Venus and Saturn lumped together, and on the eject from LEO, the trajectory had me going past the moon fairly close to it. I was worried it would mess up the plan to Venus but it was far enough to cause minimal damage to the course.
