ASTP -Apollo Soyuz Test Project 1975

The first international mission that marked the end of the space race and the end of the Apollo Program. A docking module was carried into orbit on the Saturn 1B and used by an Apollo CSM to dock with a Soyuz 19. A triumph of superpower cooperation it served to reduce cold war tensions in the mid 70s and also trial a space rescue system based on a soviet docking collar that is a precursor to those used today on the ISS.

Requires AMSO, Velcro, Velcro Saturns, Skylab 1973 v2.1, Soyuz TMA (SoyuzTMA0-6.zip) by dh219 and Soyuz Launchers by dh219. Optionally Mustard and Brians Baikonour launch pad.

Please enjoy,

cheers

Well actually it did. The space race basically ran from Sputnik in 1957 till the early 70s. The success of Apollo and the failure of the N1 pretty much sealed the conclusion. The Soviets had successes at the start, the Americans had runaway success at the end. Post 72 there was still a minor skirmish between Skylab and Salyut in the early space station stakes, but the competition, the symbology was largely gone.

ASTP saw both sides score a win together. Read some of the history of the preparations and you see that they really did get along well and work well together. Sadly this was lost in the late 70s and did not return till the early nineties. Today, the ISS is more of a commercial arrangement than a true sharing of resources in some ways. And whilst US - Russian relations may have dipped under Bush and Putin, hopefully things will improve now and we will see some frontier space cooperation again.

Who knows, maybe China will prove a worthy opponent for both sides if they progress a bit further and faster, we shall see. A little competition is always good....

cslevine good to hear. You should get the super 8 converted to digital of some sort and post on youtube for the record. There are some fantasic holiday movies from coca beach of a family who went there in 1971 and it has actual film of the apollo 15 launch from an interesting perspective.
