Some latin name for gold

[ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Midas"]Midas[/ame] ?

Midas or King Midas (in Greek Μίδας) is popularly remembered in Greek mythology for his ability to turn everything he touched into gold.

A bit off topic, but the USN naming scheme is as follows:
Battleships - historically states. This has been taken over by ballistic-missile submarines (boomers)
Carriers - Admirals or Presidents
Cruisers - famous battles
Destroyers and Frigates - famous naval personnel
Attack Submarines - fish
Command Ships - mountains
Amphibious Assault (LHA / LHD) - famous amphibious assaults or classic carriers
Amphibious Assault Transport (LPD / LSD) - cities
Ammo Ships - in a fit of black humor, volcanos
Supply Ships - famous explorers, though this is breaking down
Hospital Ships - for their function, eg. Comforter

If you are a decent Evil Galactic Emperor, you are running out of good names for your ships anyway and have to exclusively use pennant numbers.

:headbang: Well, almost.

I usually name my Orbiter ships with random sets of letters and numbers, i.e. ZSN2941, or not so random sets like XKCD401, which happens to be pretty funny. If I had to come up with a cool name for one, it would probably just be the Greek equivalent of the Latin name for whatever the ship was going to explore, or an interesting word in a language I only barely understand. :hmm:

Wait... The Los Angeles class isn't named after fish.

"Do you see the Higgs Boson?"
"Nope."

(Doesn't that mean they're using the LHC as a particle cannon if they're shooting things with it?)

Best names I've ever heard:
Challenger
Atlantis
Discovery (the shuttle and the big one from 2001;))
Endeavor
Great Northern
Pegasus
Intrepid

Worst name I've ever heard: Exaltation of the Integrality. Seriously, what in the crap does that mean?

Names of spacecraft in the Iron Hill Project:
Odyssey (Arrow)
Columbus (Arrow)
Chronus (XR-5)
Hermes(XR-5)

There won't be any more ships added to the project, but if there were:
A third Vangaurd would be called Leda.
A third Arrow would be called Francis Drake.

Now, I probably shouldn't say this since my latest project will be using one of these, but...

What about signs of the Zodiac?

Remember the Gemini program?

---------- Post added at 03:48 PM ---------- Previous post was at 02:46 PM ----------

I know this thread is just about the names themselves, but remember: it's the actual spacecraft that matters most.

For instance, whenever you create something, whether a work of literature, art, or music, the name is generally the last thing you come up with. Any artist will tell you that. When the project is all done, the name writes itself. You know what to call it because you know all about it.

I suppose the same goes if you're naming a new spacecraft design. There are lots of cool names, but once the design is finished, a minute is all it really takes to figure out the perfect name. The same almost applies if your coming up with a name for something someone else created (it's just a bit harder).

My point is that names are just titles, and a title is useless without something that it is applied to. Still, there are plenty of nice names that have been posted.

By the way, IMHO the best names (aside from self-descriptive titles like Mars Science Lab.) would be ones you wouldn't naturally associate with spacecraft. By that I mean a name that makes perfect sense considering the design, but isn't necessarily something cliche or taken from a predictable subject like famous people, mythology, etc.

P.S. Douglas needs to bring back SASSTO. The new slogan will be: "A design more sassy than any other."

I have always liked the name Erebus for an explorer ship, and have the lander or probe named Terror.
Who wouldn't want a spaceship named Terror? Except for the superstitious.
