He did, this is taken into account. Remember than when freefalling in near-vacuum, you reach quickly incredible speeds.

Some guy of the news said that one of the technological fallouts of this first could be the design of entry suits for astronauts making ejection possible a significant time after liftoff (for the DreamChaser, for exemple), or as an ultimate backup if a capsule parachute system was to fail completely.

Nice jump. The HD coverage was awesome.

But Kittinger remains the true hero in my point of view. He didn't have all that excessively safe gimmick available. Not even a pressure capsule. He did jump with a swollen hand due to a pressure malfunction. It was truly different times. Today we even have padded playgrounds.

We need an addon with UMMUFA capability and works with D3D9 stat, who's up to the challenge? :)

I'm up for it, Was already thinking about it in fact.

But I have to finish Debugging spider and finish my Orbital Workshop and Saturn upgrades before I start a new project.\

Damn my ADD

Why UMMUFA? Isn't it the fallback for add-ons that either have no UMMU or intentionally make no use of UMMU?

Yea, you're right. Ignore what I said, I meant UMMU capability.

Interestingly, the jump happened 65 years after Chuck Yeager broke through the sonic wall... and it is still not sure if he managed to get past Mach 1. He was definitely traveling at higher Mach numbers than any other skydiver before, but is team estimated his speed at 1137 km/h. Where he started, the speed of sound was 1123 km/h, around FL500 the speed of sound reaches its minimum at 1055 km/h. Since he reached the top speed after 40 seconds, this would mean a minimal altitude of FL1000 and Mach 1 would be 1080 km/h.

All pretty close to the estimated speed, so it is hard to tell if it is Mach 1.01 or Mach 0.99 in the end.

Is it possible to properly simulate, with a UMMU, a survivable free-fall from that height as well as the parachute deployment?

Another thing:

There are a lot of Turkish people in the comments that, for some reason, keep claiming Felix is a fellow Turk, even though he was born in Salzburg, Austria.

Here's a video of the jump:

NY Times reports FAI is stating official numbers of 128,100 ft or 24.2 miles (39.05 km) for jump altitude, free fall extended for 119,846 feet (36.53 km), and he achieved 833.9 mph (1342 km/hr) or Mach 1.24  He was in free-fall for 4 minutes and 20 seconds.

Nice!

Yep, the news seem to use that number all over the world. I must say I'm (happily) surprised it makes the first page of the news here this morning.

It looks very much like space, especially with the wide angle :)

I think the lens is specifically a fisheye as the capsule appears to be noticeably distorted and the horizon is exaggerated. Seeing that much curvature with the human eye sure would be a sight. I've seen some photography where people take a fisheye lens on a regular flight and a similar effect is produced. The black sky really helps the effect.

In the live stream, you had been able to see how the capsule descended on a parachute after Baumgartner landed safely.

During the final launch preparations, you had also been able to see the parachute between capsule and balloon.

Just like those people who claim that Obama is a Muslim (and that almost everything is islamic achievements...).

You know, this is Youtube / the internet...

I never knew that Felix and Baumgartner are really widespread turkish names.
