Has anyone ever tried this?

Am planning on doing a flight to the moon and back. Delta glider to MIR, Brighton beach, and back. Nothing special. Except I'm planning on doing it real time (no timewarp) and have orbiter running 24/7. Am also planning on buying foods that I can make with warm water, and have only lots of water and an electric warmer. So I will eat and drink only what I bring in my room before start. Also I will do this during vacation so I don't have to leave. And also I will use my computer only for orbiter and read books or browse the internet on a notebook.

Is it doable, has anyone ever tried it? I think it might be a fun little experiment?

:shifty:

It's been done... Wife was in Arizona for a week long conference.

The trick I had was setting my clock to remind me to check the screen for correction burns if any were needed. I used a Shuttle-A, which I used to justify hitting the kitchen (galley) for food. And trips to the bathroom (head). Kindle for books and netflix.
I had a layover at Brighton Beach for resupply (grocery store run) and started the return trip the next day back to the ISS to end the "mission".

You seem to want to be a little more immersive. Let us know how it goes eh?

Only to the moon? Why not Mars?

Just kidding. I also thought about doing that - at least flying in real time but not with the limitation of staying in my house.
I might do that in the future :hmm:

I've done it in real time... but not using the delta glider! I don't have the stamina for that. :hmm:

I found the "World of 2001" Orbiter package and did it in perhaps 3 hours or so, using the fast Mars ship. (I forget the name of it, but it's the smaller version of "Discovery" with lesser engines.)

If you really want to simulate spaceflight properly, you also need to put dozens of loud fans all around you, even when you want to sleep. And no shower till Wacken Brighton Beach. Start every flight day with an annoyingly happy friend calling you and play some weird wake up song. Realize that the flight surgeon changed your diet before launch: Let a friend exchange all frozen food and instant food of yours with some more surprising selections.

...and don't forget being forced to drink large quantities of weird potassium-enriched substitute orange juice that gives you diarrhoea...

... a silly question in this context: Is it allowed to bring porn to the ISS? I mean... 6 months is a long time.

You may bring it, but you may not use it. Will it help you?

Sure, but remember: Its 6 months with cameras EVERYWHERE. MCC-H knows when you are fapping. (And trust me, its no thing somebody at Houston wants to see).

You'd better bring some book on theoretical physics with you. Also, from what I have heard, the changed distribution of blood in your body will also make it rather easy to keep your hands over the blanket.

Don't read this article anyway: https://www.theguardian.com/uk/2000/nov/19/theobserver.uknews

Good choice. Also I can personally recommend anything by Danckwerts' on chemical engineering, especially diffusion / mass transfer processes in packed columns. That will stop you thinking about leisure activities of any sort for a long time.

Sample here:

I see your chemical engineering and I raise by a convex optimization:

(That is the current state of the art theory behind modern autopilots, interesting for Orbiter, but...... MAAAAAAAAAAAAAATH)

Are there even cameras in the sleeping compartments?

Mhh, interesting. I never thought about the whole concept of reproduction in space. This seems more difficult than I thought.

Remember this is a rather academic discussion. In reality, nature has so far always found a way to make sure reproduction takes place. Even academics reproduce despite knowing the consequences.

You probably don't want to know too much. There have been rumors of astronauts having intimate relationships in space. Both in Russia and in the United States. But that's not proven.

Some famous pornstars did it for 20 seconds aboard an airplane performing a 0-g maneuver. So nothing is impossible. You can be pretty sure drugs were involved, given the necessity of a perfect timing, and the strong situational stress which is rather counter-productive. So nothing is impossible. That's hard science.

In February 2013, Dennis Tito's Inspiration Mars Foundation announced that they were going to send a two-person crew – a man and a woman – on a 501-day, free-return, flyby mission to Mars and back.[citation needed] Jane Poynter stressed the importance of the pre-existing stable emotional bond between the members of the couple. She cited her own experience as being a Biosphere 2 crew member together with her husband Taber MacCallum, who is the chief technology officer of Inspiration Mars.

In June 2015, Pornhub announced its plans to make the first pornographic film in space. It launched a crowdfunding campaign to fund the effort, dubbed Sexploration, with the goal of raising $3.4 million in 60 days. The campaign only received pledges for $236 086. If funded, the film would have been slated for a 2016 release, following six months of training for the two performers and six-person crew.[21][22][23][24] Though it claimed to be in talks with multiple private spaceflight carriers, the company declined to name names "for fear that that would risk unnecessary fallout" from the carriers.[21] A Space.com article about the campaign mentioned that in 2008, Virgin Galactic received and rejected a $1 million offer from an undisclosed party to shoot a sex film on board SpaceShipTwo.[22]

Short of actual space, the adult entertainment production company Private Media Group has filmed a movie called The Uranus Experiment: Part Two where an actual zero-gravity intercourse scene was accomplished by flying an airplane to an altitude of 11,000 feet (3350 meters) and then doing a steep dive. The filming process was particularly difficult from a technical and logistical standpoint. Budget constraints allowed for only one 20-second shot, featuring the actors Sylvia Saint and Nick Lang.[25] Berth Milton, Jr, president and CEO of Private Media Group, says "You would not want to be afraid of flying, that's for sure!"[26]
