Personally I like Zombie horror movies (Dawn of the Dead etc.) and Sci-Fi/Horror movies (AVP etc.) Also the occasional horror anime.

I love zombie horror. I play a game called Dead Frontier and I enjoy it a lot. I think that zombie movies just aren't scary though. I don't usually watch movies that were shot earlier than 1990, I don't like old movies. I also don't like zombies that are a result of voo-doo or any other kind dark magic. I love the virus thing. My favorites are 28 Days Later(better than 28 Weeks Later), Zombieland, Shaun of the Dead and Dawn of the dead(2004). I've seen Dead Snow and even though the zombies were nothing like I like them the movie made me laugh. I mean, seriously - Nazi zombies? That's so awesome!

Edit: Horror anime? What's that, henitai?

Of course it isn't, but there's a striking similarity in how they work. After all, porn is rarely watched for its interesting story or detailed character developement. It's watched because of the one act it plays over and over in a multitude of ways.

Movies like Saw (after you saw the first one and know therefore how the story will go anyways), Hostel etc. Work pretty much the same way. Except the act is a different one...

Yeah I see your point.

Modern horror's like Saw arn't horrors to me. There just snuff movies without the body-bags.

I love the zombie movies and prefer the 28 Days later, 28 Weeks Later films. I love them all really, even those cardboard 1970 films where they stumble around and act stupid. Now, they turn into Linford Christie and have appitites like junkies with the munchies. It's better I think and has more suspence, mainly in fact that you want your favourate charactor to be faster than Linford Christie.
The old hammer movies I still watch as I grew up with them. Peter Cushing was my favourate childhood actor in those films and "Tales of the unexpected" was especially good. The Hammer House of Horror seems so dated, but still is a good view. A collection of tall tales akin to "Tales of the Crypt".

I like horror. Some horror that is.

I don't recall going out to see a good horror film in recent years. Watched the remake of The Omen when it came out. I think the original was better.

We have a channel here on basic cable that plays movies 24/7, some of which are horror classics (mostly Vincent Price). Every once in awhile they will throw something in like Don't Look In The Basement (aka The Forgotten) or The Last House On The Left, which leaves me scratching my head thinking, "Jeez, they made stuff like that as far back as the 70's?". But then I remember that there was this Italian filmmaker that made some shocking and horrific gore movies back then, and it's not such a surprise to me anymore.

My list of recommended horror movies:

The Thing (both the original, and John Carpenter's)
They Live (not so much horror, but fun anyway)
Thirteen Ghosts (fun)
Legally Blonde

I'm not that well travelled in horror. My list is:

Alien

The Thing (have only seen John Carpenter version. If you can locate 1951 version, tell me.)

The Exorcist (I barely got through the first few minutes.)

The Terminator

Yeah I see your point.
Horror anime? not that... :p

I personally can't stand 28 Days/Weeks Later, but I love the rest you mentioned, except Dead Snow, can't say I've heard of that one.

Dead Snow is a Norwegian horror movie. What I like about it is how hard they failed - It's one of the worst movies I have ever seen, and at the same time one of the funniest. Check out the trailer -

Nazi Zombies should be one of the ultimate products, much like linking up Star Wars with Lego! I remember seeing trailers for that but never heard about its release.

Have you seen the British made 5-part series, Dead Set? It's a zombie series based around the annoying Big Brother phenomenon, from Charlie Brooker. It's really quite good!

And the Walking Dead series has been pretty good so far. Wonder how it will fare with a longer run than 6 episodes.

really can't be bothered with most modern hollywood horrors as they just seem to lean on the gore button at the expense of everything else.
how about RING, that was pretty scary? actually theres a few cool asian horror movies recently
and i still love that classics; the omen, the exorcist, the wicker man, don't look now, romero's zombie movies. all terrifying/comical depending on how much you've suspended your disbelief.
and ALIEN, best movie ever!

It's a terrific movie :)

They actually played on that in the 2nd Starwars movie to (a bit over-done in my opinion):

In Alien (they also do it in Aliens, the 2nd movie) it's more subtle:

alien_033.JPG

Yeah i noticed the odd design for a kids movie some time ago. Just asking cos i'm interested in your take on it, but do you really think that they deliberately played on that?

I mean the difference between them is that Starwars is a kids / family movie, part of a gigantic kids movie franchise (where sexual imagery, even subconscious is to be avoided i would think)

(in any movie like that, surely if somethings on screen, its because someone wanted it there i think)

and of course alien is not a movie that you'd want a child to watch for all sorts of reasons.

I mean for alien, they knew what things were meant to represent, it was a concious decision to use these design aspects, i find it hard to believe that George or whoever was involved sat down and agreed to make the arena in a kids movie look like it was made of giant vaginas. Not the first time either though, how about the pit of the sarlacc? and what about the rubbish looking CGI thing that came out of the pit in the special editions?

I find horror movies where you can't see the [insert type of evil entity here] to be much scarier than any special effects could be. My favorites:
...
2. The Blair Witch Project
...
I was exactly going to post the same concept.
"The Blair Witch Project" was creeeeeeeeepy!!

If ever Hollywood remake a foreign film, it's worth watching the original as it's usually far better than the remake! The Ring trilogy is quite good, and Ju On is good too. They always seem to get the atmosphere just right, which is never recaptured on the remake.

Another one in this category is the Spanish film, [Rec]. I watched this one not too long ago and found it to be really quite good. I haven't seen the remake (Quarantine), but the reviews weren't as good - even though it was supposedly a more-or-less shot-for-shot copy!

Oh yeah, and while on the subject of hand-held camera films like [Rec] and The Blair Witch Project, has anyone seen the UFO abduction story, The McPherson Tape? The end is totally rubbish, but most of the film is actually really good. And they cover up the really dodgy alien costumes by having a very clever "film interference" mechanism any time an alien is nearby, which also ramps up the tension. Worth a look. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0169005/

EDIT: btw, for anyone who is curious, the quality isn't great (which may actually help...) but it's available here on Google Video: [ame="http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-2110145479236650834"]Alien Abduction: Incident at Lake County[/ame]

EDIT again: Hmmm... Just watched it again. The acting is pretty awful at times! Especially the kid!

Right behind you - don't look!
"The Ring" remade by Verbinsky is a favourite of mine - having watched it and the original Japanese I find it's a rare case of the remake being better. Apart from Naomi Watts being downright, er... Watts-y, I like horror movies where the characters attempt to investigate the predicament they're in.

I just had an epic night.
I was gonna watch The Ring and sleep, so I started looking for The Ring with Hebrew subtitles on Megavideo. After ~5 mins of searching I found it. Well, actually I didn't. After I finished watching the movie and posting on Facebook how awesome it was I discovered it was The Ring II.
So I searched again. This time when I clicked the link it was The Scream. Seriously? That's how they upload movies here in Israel. I've decided to watch it anyway. It was rather funny.
Then back to The Ring. I've searched all over the internet and eventually gave up and watched the English version. I think the second one was better.
And now it's 8am

"That movie is better than skydiving and 10 orgasms AT THE SAME TIME."
- Me, on The Ring II

If whoever designed the doorways in the Geonosis arena did NOT think about vaginae... then I think that person is either too young to have any sexual thoughts/desires yet or a non-human alien to whom sex is a non-existing concept.

I mean the difference between them is that Starwars is a kids / family movie

I think Starwars is much more than just a 'kids-movie'. Don't forget it originates from the more free-spirited 1970's, where the concept of open sex was much less frowned upon than today (atleast in theory)

Think about it; Starwars celebrates the REBELLION against the democratic imperial senate (the government!). It celebrates Han Solo, who admitted to being a smuggler and even shot greedo ([ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Han_shot_first"]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Han_shot_first[/ame]), it celebrates anarchy (the Java people driving around in their big tank doing black market business with robots :) , and the nomadic sand-people that attack lone travelers in the deserts of Tatooine and steals their speeder-vehicles).

While I agree that the 3 latest Starwars movies (episode 1,2,3) are much 'cleaner' than the 3 original, I don't think Mr Lucas has changed that much in spirit (or his perception of 'political correctness') since he began this adventure :)

Teletubbies is for kids. Starwars is for geeks. Alien is for connoisseurs :)
(I love all 3 actually)

i find it hard to believe that George or whoever was involved sat down and agreed to make the arena in a kids movie look like it was made of giant vaginas.

People may surprise you sometimes :)

Besides, vaginae aren't bad, are they? ;)
Honestly, in a 'kids-movie' I'd rather see a vagina than a gun-fight.

The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad. The second half (Legend of Sleepy Hollow) has one of the funniest and scariest scenes in Disney history.
