If you are getting an error that says you are unable to connect, you may be on a network which blocks port 6667. This is common in most businesses, schools, and universities. I have not tried using Opera with the web client, so I'm not sure if that could be the problem or not. You can always try using an actual IRC program and use that to connect to the server.

Right, but at least one client out there (trillian, what I use) assumes the waffle (since all irc channels have the waffle)...so it'll only accept "orbiter" not "#orbiter".

And from this, I decree, makes trillian fail. Not all channels have a #. There are other character, for example, that make it non-public and other cool Stuff(tm).

Just tried connecting again. Finally got a reason why I haven't been able to connect. Aparently I've been k-lined This is using the same username (Kveldulf). Considering I haven't even been able to connect, I wonder if someone has been using the name and got in trouble?

Then that client is broken, since all chatrooms do not have the #. There are many available symbols, depending on the server. The server running #orbiter accepts both #channels and &channels, for example.

klines are based on IP. It is more likely someone near you using the same ISP got in trouble.

If you are behind a firewall you need to get the firewall administator to open port 6667 to irc.orbithangar.com
Many places won't do that (quite understandably!) so the alternative is to try mibbit - www.mibbit.com where you can connect to the IRC channel over port 80 (http - web traffic).

Of course, you should check out your local internet access policies to make sure you aren't breaking any rules before doing this.

I get errors from Mibbit if I try to connect from my home computer. I think it said something like the IRC server refused the connection. No idea why though. It works fine from everywhere else I've tried it.

If the java chat works, any other regular client should work too.

I've had similar problems to that when I use mibbit from my home machine with exactly the same settings. If I use it form another machine it works fine. I have no idea why.

You'll probably have better luck with that in a university environment than I would in a corporate setting LOL. I somehow doubt I'd be able to make a business case for needing port 6667 opened for the irc chat. Oh well. I've been too busy at work lately for it to matter anyway, which is a good thing.

Righto - Mibbit does not like it when you log in using different computers. Set up two accounts (with different nicknames) if you wish to use Mibbit in different locations. There was a bug report about this a few months back but stuffed if I can find it!
