Hello Fellow Orbinauts.

I am having difficulty installing the Moonbase Alpha add-on to a clean installation of Orbiter 2006. Most times Orbiter will crash just after reading spacecraft3 file, but not every time. Other times I get a message referring to Orbiter.log . I assume that the log gives further information about the crash, but I do not know how to set up a log file or where it is located.

Can anyone help? Cheers.

The orbiter.log is in your main orbiter directory.

do you have spacecraft3 installed? I've no idea if that addon comes with it

Guten Abend Deutschland! Can you be more specific, as I don't have a file with the name Orbiter.log . Tschus.

Garyw - yes, I have downloaded spacecraft3.dll and .cfg

Yes you do but the extension may be hidden.

Do you have a file called "orbiter" with a white background and black lines? If you double-click on it you will see this at the top:

**** Orbiter.log
Build Sep 29 2006 [v.060929]

You must search in your main orbiter directory for a textfile called "orbiter".

Guten Abend.

Garyw - If I have a file called Orbiter.log, I can't see it using Windows explorer. Is it in the main directory with orbiter.exe ? I have "show hidden files and folders" on.

As I said before in the main directory. Yes in the same as orbiter.exe.

Garyw means that sometimes it could be called only "Orbiter" and sometimes "orbiter.log". This is depending on if you have the extensions on.

The Punk - The trouble is, there doesn't seem to be a file named orbiter or orbiter.log . I am looking in the right place, the main directory that contains the orbiter.exe, but I cannot see the file. Should it always be there, or is is deleted each time you start or exit orbiter?

There could be the problem.

Launch your scenario that doesn't work with administrator rights and then look again for the file.

Thanks, I will give that a try.

The Punk - dankeschon - I now have an orbiter.log file. It tells me that there is a syntax error in the moon surface base list. The last entry was for Spacecraft3.dll . I will correct the surface base list and see what happens next.

Good that it works.
Bitteschön.

I think it has something to do with that moonbase alpha uses an older base configuration file type.

Is there anything I can do to fix the problem so that Moonbas Alpha works?

Yes.
Move the file MoonbaseAlpha.cfg from Orbiter/Config to Orbiter/Config/Moon/Base.
Then open THIS file and DELETE the following few lines:
; === Surface Base ===
Name = Moonbase Alpha
Size = 4000
ObjectSize = 350

Then REWRITE them into:
BASE-V2.0
Name = Moonbase Alpha
Location = -10 +52
Size = 4000

And then override the Moon.cfg with the original Moon.cfg from orbiter, because MoonBaseAlpha overrides the original.

The Punk - Ausgezeichnet - I will get on with those edits right now. I will let you know how I get on.

garyw - thanks for your help too.

Not problem - Sorry, I assumed you were running XP.. I should get Vista setup :-)

The Punk - We are making progress. No more error messages about Moon surface bases. Next problem - orbiter loads but does not display anything. It continues running but returns to the desktop. I have to use Task Manager to close it down. The log has the following messages. Can you help?

Finished initialising world
