Ford, how did you get a moonscape that is not smooth on the horizon? I can see mountains on the limb, it looks very realistic.

This one can be found on AVSIM. By Brian Jones titled, "Moon3d". It is beautiful, but I've found the surface bases all are "underground."

Do you find this, too, Ford?

Howdy Andy,

looks nifty eyh? Blame Artlav's Orulex 1.0 Alpha for these visuals! He's a true magician. God, how I wish for an accurate Level 10 global lunar heightmap data, I wouldn't leave the computer screen anymore!

Here's another one:

FordPrefect,

This is your work?!? Bloody fantastic! (sorry if this is offensive to any Brits.) I was convinced it was the Moon3d I'd found on AVSIM.

So have you managed to keep the lunar bases above ground? This is why I don't have the previously mentioned addon installed any longer, as it's a big problem in my estimation.

Really spectacular! Please make it available soon.

no, he meant it's Artlav's work. Orulex is a dynamic scenery generator for Orbiter, and it's currently in Alpha-testing. In the add-ons section you will find a thread where you can download the whole thing and post your bug reports. It will take Artlav some more time to hunt down all the glitches, but he's working quite fast on it. I think we can expect a final release in less than half a year, if nothing completely unexpected comes up. It supports imported heightmaps (currently available are Earth, Mars and Moon) as well as random generated fractal terrains for non-mapped planets.

He didn't quite succeed in getting the bases to the surface, since this is hard-wired into the orbiter core. He made a workaround however, so his algorithm creates a crater or a plateau around the base, depending on it's altitude above/below the global mesh.

Well, it's bloody brilliant work!

Ever since I first discovered Orbiter, I've dreamed of the possibility of actually putting a payload down on Malapert Mountain.

The dream seems to be moving from possibility to probability. I'll keep my eyes on this to be sure.

Thanks.

Although I enjoy Orbiter, this is one sim I enjoyed when it first came out! And still enjoy it today, since it runs on XP without having to mess around with DOSBox!! And it is a great challenge too!:)

My Low-Lunar-Orbit moon station:

lowMoonOrbitStation01.jpg

lowMoonOrbitStation02.jpg

The station is getting big here:

To give an impression about the size:

lowMoonOrbitStation05.jpg

It's orbiting only about 850 m above the Moon's surface..
