I was just wondering of what will happen to Orbiter when it has expanded as far as retail stores and maybe as a video game in the Playstation or Xbox series... :hmm:

Maybe an Orbiter craze would start...

Nope. Just complaints that its not realistic because you can't fly like you can in star wars............

I met one kid who was convinced he could fly the space shuttle because he had played Rouge Squadron. >.<

FTFY.

Also, Orbiter wouldn't be fun at all on the PS or Xbox. The controllers just aren't suited to that sort of thing.

And I agree with the previous replies in this thread. It really isn't the sort of thing that has mass-market appeal, especially since what really makes Orbiter awesome are all the addons.

All that would happen is that people would try to fly in space like you do on Earth, then when it doesn't work, they would return the game to the store because it is "broken";)

-Cartridges would not allow addons.
-Orbiter would not be free.
-People might complain because there is nothing to shoot at.
-Martin would become an underpaid developer published by a publisher company that keeps all the profit for itself.

If it would be EA, we could at least be sure to get Orbiter 2009, Orbiter 2010 and Orbiter 2011...

All the same game, with different splash screens and different names for the spacecraft.

And the RCS callouts would be in John Madden's voice. When you dock you'd hear him say, "...And it's good! Captain ______ can always be counted on to come through for you." There would also be instant replays. And a Playbook MFD. Every frat in America would have a copy.

But yeah, it's a niche thing. When I first found it almost exactly a year ago, I showed it to a few friends, saying, "Hey, lookit this program I found. Isn't it neat?" The most memorable response was "More like 'Snorebiter'." I never mention it anymore since no one's interested.

Same problem here. I even had a few friends who were hardcore "Firefly" fans and showed them jmarcure's firefly and how you could fly it around...they weren't that interested.

I initailly downloaded Orbiter because of the Firefly, my initial thought was "dang this is a awful big download just to fly around with a Firefly (or Grey Goose, I think a studio owns the word Firefly now...).
Anyway, now I'm addicted to Orbiter, and the Firefly sits in the hanger (proverbially speaking).
I agree though, the mass market crowd wouldn't latch onto Orbiter. And if a big studio got ahold of it, I think they'd ruin it.

I showed Orbiter to one of my friends once. He was too scared to download even the basic addons (like orbitersound) due to an overwelming fear that it would put a virus on his system. I told him I'm downloaded literally DOZENS of files for Orbiter without a single vidus, but he was still standing on his belief.

Tell him to stick to Spacecraft3 vessels then. Nothing but mesh, texture and .ini or config files, no scarry .dll's. :P

Besides, Greg Burch's series are great fun. ;)

Orbiter wouldn't work on consols. There are just too many controls to really get a good expirience without a computer.

Recently, I sent one of my friends, who is a FSX nut, an email to about Orbiter. His reply was "Cool, I'll check it out". He didn't say anything about it for a month. I thought he wasn't interested. But I caught a glimpse of his desktop, I saw the Orbiter icon and I asked if he liked it. He had completely dropped FSX. He's hooked.

whatever happened would stop as soon as the word got out that math is required...

I have it running always at my shop and my customers think is "neat looking" but "crazy complicated"... And while it is ( shuttle fleet expansion pack... wow.. its working fine.. now, but what an endeavor, eh? ) the fun stops for most when they find out that some thinking is involved.

You mean Hackcraft3 and virus inis and zombie meshes! The internet is a dangerous place! HAIL PROBE!

I completely agree that console controls can't be used at all.
Marketing it is out of the question because of the lack of profit it generates.
So everything stays the same and IMO we reach everyone interested.

I agree. Too much thinking involved for the mass market "gamer" crowd. Orbiter would make a terrible retail sim for the very reason most of us here love it. I think this sim is better kept like it is for those who want something realistic.

Yeh, the general public gets all confused when thinking is required. My idiot girlfriend doesn't like orbiter since she thinks I'm going to somehow mess up the *real* space program. So we came to a compromise - she absolutely insists that I disconnect the internet from the computer when orbiter is running.

heh heh now if I could get a suit to visit the house!! That would be hilarious..
