Paul, the psychic Octopus died last night, at the old age of 2.5 years (old for an eight-armed pensioner)

Because of his exceptional popularity, the aquarium owners plan to cremate Paul's body and put his ashes on permanent exhibition in his personal shrine.

Rest in peace, Paul! We'll never know if you saw this coming.

(I still find it impressive to read this: [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deaths_in_2010"]Deaths in 2010 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia[/ame])

what was the cause of his death?
was it because of the aquarium? lack of oxygen?

No, just old age. Octopus don't get older than three years, not even with very good care, they die at two years on the average, so Paul was even a little bit a Methuselah under the cephalopods.

Have you ever eaten calamari? ;)

Though, I do wonder- how do you cremate a cephalopod?

Yes, I have. What I meant with disgusting is not lack of tact, rather that humans are silly enough that you can hype an animal on TV and even continue to earn money with its ashes... It's kind of disturbing, really.

Sillier than all the other nonsense people manage to hype? ;)

Besides, I'd be fairly surprised if some of the money didn't trickle down into conservation or research programs, or something like that- although Sea Life Centres is a commercial venture.

Actually the money from the Paul merchandise already went into a sea turtle research and protection center in Greece.

I also immediately thought of Paul McCartney when I read the title of the thread.

If an Octopus can predict the outcome of World Cup soccer/football, shouldn't human psychics (hunars in general being vastly more intelligent than Octopi) be able to at least predict the weather?
