Are you thinking of replacing the 3D boxes with 2D planes? That could work. It's going to mean alot of rework but that should be able to bring down the VAB poly count but it still going to be rather high at around 25k to 35k.

Well, if you are haggling with me, I think 25k is already a good step in the right direction, maybe you can get it down to 15k*
*Which just means I think 20k is a reasonable scale for the VAB in first iteration.
If you could get the general details a bit lower in polys, we could maybe get some budget free for adding detail meshes during run-time for having more level of detail near the camera. Like adding some detail to the next work platform near the player.
