Not pollution - but simple economics would drive the electric car
All,
I am faraz khan mentioned above and am the one who assembled the first home-brew design electric car in PK. Seeing the discussion above I would like to say that pollution or the environment is really a secondary factor as viewed by many. In my mind, the market would automatically adjust itself to favor alternative fuels and electric cars - and trust me going GREEN is not going to be a factor (specially in the third world).
The reason why I made the electric car here is simple. We have no oil, our gas is running out and soon all the CNG cars would stop (Pakistan has run almost out of CNG). We have plenty of sun and plenty of wind. Electric cars would pave the way for introduction of such technology at a large scale - not because its 'green' but because its ACTUALLY CHEAPER. Yes- My electric car is around 10 times cheaper than gasoline cars and costs about the same.
So i would say that the economic and political reasons are all FOR the electric car in todays age. The 'green' effect - well lets just say that such ideas are considered super luxury (specially in the third world) when people are striving just to get food!
