AHAHAHAHAHAHAHA SUCK IT STUPIDBEARD

Yeah, I'm thinking we should start up our steel production for plate mail and weapons now that we have our magma facilities ready.

EDIT: Wait seriously? Isn't that our second wrestler named Stakud that's died? That name must be CURSED

Its in process, its slow though because I have to smelt hematite, make charcoal, make pig-iron bars, and finally make steel bars.
I need about 10 steel bars to outfit every warrior.

Oh, stupidbeard is now the treasurer(old bookkeeper) and another dwarf is the trader. 'Shadow Addict' is just mayor and expedition leader now(and consequently has more free time).

Oh that's good actually. How accurate are our stockpile records right now?
Pretty much everything except for the thousands of random stone littering the entire fortress is on the z status screen now.(aka as accurate as it gets)

I should have the year finished by tomorrow and ready for the next person to carry on.

Ahhh good good. How much hematite is available? I never pursued any of the veins I found.
More than enough.

So I've started to try and pick this game up, and I am amused, to say the least. It's pretty interesting. My only problem seems to be with stairs and setting up different Z-levels. I actually lost a miner because he couldn't come back up! I've checked out the Wiki, but to no avail. Anyone have any tips?

Mod: Feel free to move to a new thread at your discretion.

You just reminded me, I've been wanting to make a DF discussion thread on here, so I just did. I'm not entirely sure what your problem is, could you be a bit more specific?

Staircases need to be on top of each other, generally you want to build up/down staircases. Ups obviously only go up, down only goes down. You need a staircase on every level that is accessed.

You might have told your miner to remove the staircase with the remove up-staircases/ramps designation. Otherwise you may have blocked the staircase exit or had him channel himself into a corner.

The simplest way to get a dwarf unstuck is to designate a nearby wall as an up or up/down staircase and then dig staircases up to the floor you need to get to.

An finally, don't worry about dead dwarves. I've already killed 2 in this bloodline fort. Its all part of the fun. Feel free to ask for a turn with the bloodline anytime, I'd try get a fort to survive for 2-3 game years first, but there's no requirements to join. (You are absolutely welcome to "accidently" kill every dwarf in the bloodline fort)

17th Sandstone 204
Six migrants have arrived and the fortress had another birth

11th Moonstone 204
A miner is taken by a fey mood and a goblin siege has arrived. They brought 25 soldiers. On the plus side they brought no crossbowman so we'll have the advantage.(correction for the last invasion it was 10 goblins not 5)

Its a statue! That means actually usable! 91800☼, the most valuable artifact yet.

8th Opal

I've decided to chance the siege. We'll see how it goes. Note to self: Build deathtrap entrance.

15th Opal
I've called it off due to gross incompetence of the squads ability to stand in the front hallway in order or fight. Somebody else can give it a try.

10 Obsidian

The Great Cistern is pumping itself full. Yay!
cistern.jpg

18th Obsidian

Shadow Addict nearly drowned with high pressure water when I was filling the well from the great cistern. He likes to walk through the aqueduct too much. He was lucky there was a dwarf 4 steps from the lever required to save him. Shadow Addict is now a dabbling swimmer. Note to self: Build Dwarven Washing Machine.

19th Obsidian

Momuz Tishakdodok GET OUT OF THE AQUEDUCT! I'm trying to flood it!

20th Obsidian
The well is filling! Slowly, I should have put the pressure reset closer to the well. (There is already a working backup well near the tower-cap farm if the meeting hall well doesn't have enough water)

1st Granite 205

Our fortress is worth over 1 million dwarfbucks! Praise the miners! (Remember we are mid siege)

On a side note the fortress is just now worth 1 million dwarfbucks, I've been reading the ☼ symbol as another zero and multiplied the real value by 10, oops. The obsidian works is 1/3 finished, magma input is active, needs the water input and a bridge to dump water.

Who has the next turn?

I do, I started with it a few minutes ago. I'm gonna post a special update just for the siege just because it was so incredibly badass.

1st Granite 205

Over the course of 204, lotsa things happened. Most significantly, I was reelected mayor over that poser Stupidbeard (HA HA HA HAAAAA). The leader I had left in my stead, Eagle, dumped his position after some goblins sieged. The fort is in good shape, though I can’t figure out why there’s a refuse pile in the stone workroom:

Anyway, I’ll report later after I decide how to deal with the siege.

7th Granite 205

Looks like my strategy is working.

fm29.png

It was a brilliant strategic move; I opened the gate. The opening volley from the marksdwarves took out at least six, while the rest scattered. My wrestlers pursued and began tearing them apart. Soon, they encountered a group of about fifteen goblins. They charged and DESTROYED them. One began to run away, but a soldier just chased him, ripping off his left hand while he ran:

fm30.png

The resulting carnage (note that not a single dwarf had more than a scratch on him):

fm31.png

Nomal Kivisheshtan (the dwarf who tore the goblin’s hand off) was caught by himself when another wave of goblins was fleeing and OH MY GOD

fm32.png

He PUNTED THE GOBLIN DOZENS OF YARDS INTO A POND (the yellow X is where the goblin is, now floating in the water). And with that, the siege is over. What have we learned? The fighting dwarves of Furymetals are COMPLETE BADASSES.

I never doubted our dwarves. I'm sure their masterwork steel plate helped. I just couldn't get them all to stand at the entrance at the same time. (Goblins only brought 2 legendaries, but if you've ever played adventure mode a single dwarf can be killed when stunned from a lucky shot and torn apart by 50 untrained villagers.

Merry Dwarfmass! Remember to designate the goblin sized armor for melting.

The fort is in good shape, though I can’t figure out why there’s a refuse pile in the stone workroom:
Basicallywe have too many bones and shells. All non enclosed refuse piles are filled with bones, skulls and shells only and are a crafting resource (exception is the pile near the tanner which has untanned hides and might create some miasma if the skins are allowed to rot. I would just leave it, it makes the bone carvers more efficient.

Nickname him "Bullroarer". (Let's see who gets why this obscure Tolkien reference applies to the situation).

OK, Eagle sent me the last save and I'm taking Shadow Addicts turn because it's taking him a while. By the way, how do I open the gate?

EDIT: Found it.

I tried to label most of the levers with shift+N (Notes).

Is there anything I should be working on? I see something about an obsidian works, but I don't know where it is or what I need to do to complete it.

In any case, the first part of my journal, told by 'Linguofreak' Rovodåkum, child:

So I'm in charge of the fortress now for some reason. The last leader got a bit too sober and left me in charge. I'm just a kid, not an administrator. I have no idea what I'm doing, and I'm far too sober myself.

I did deal with the siege, though. I got the military down to the gate and opened it. The goblins fled after taking heavy losses.

Elves showed up, wasn't quite sure what to do with them. We seemed low on wood though, so I bought all the wood they had, at the cost of a pair of mittens. They seemed quite happy with the trade, 40* profit for them, they were saying, but I rather think we got the better end of the deal. I tend to prefer useful things to artsy clothing.

I ordered some mining done. We're dwarves, we mine, right? But I'm not very knowledgable about such things, and I ordered a bunch of cobaltite mined out before someone told me it isn't worth anything.

Some dwarf by the name of Shadow Addict was complaining about the refuse stockpile in the stone workroom. I asked around, and it seems that its a stockpile for turtle shells.

Some dwarves were acting weird. They decided not to go to a party just so they could eat and drink. Don't parties usually have snacks...?

Migrants have arrived. There are now 116 of us.

I've got 40 odd idlers out of a population of 116. I'm not really sure what jobs need to be done at this point.

Since I tend to be military-minded, might as well have them make MOAR WEAPONS!

I'm thinking a cast Obsidian dwarven head (maybe body too) that spits magma out of its mouth. Obviously it should be located up high on the mountain....or at least over the entrance.

Well, I don't know how to finish or work the obsidian works, so that's out. There's a certain peak that I'm building shafts towards (just because I like building towers out of peaks), that might be a good location for you to do it from, though it is far from the magma.

Obsidian works aren't terribly complex. You build a bowl which you fill with magma then dump water on that and dig out your obsidian. I was trying to use a retractable bridge to dump the water, but that isn't really necessary. The most thought is making it so you can stop and restart the flows without getting miners killed.

Don't worry about finishing other people's project. Build your own. Oh and dig. Find more hematite!
