For the bigger stuff I am of the personal opinion of going to Direct X 10
What can DX10 do that OpenGL can not? Especially under Linux.

Done it. The thin client gets hung in the same manner.
Okay, then it's either OGLA or your drivers.
Please run this thru the scenario and post full ogla.log (removing previous runs from it of course), debug header and crash.
http://orbides.1gb.ru/orbf/ogla-100818-1.zip

As for limiting features and their modularity, you said:
Sure, when adding them. Once they're there, removing is easy, so no point breaking what works.

I'd like to ask just one question while we're here:
Wasn't the idea behind OGLA to replace the DX7 client which runs poorly under Wine, while the DX10 runs OK (does it?) ? If this is true and since we have DX10 underway, then yes, I'd agree with you about letting OGLA go, Artlav.
Could I ask someone to clarify the DX10 situation under Wine?
OpenGL runs natively on Linux, it runs nearly so thru Wine. DX10 would be running thru emulation of unknown bugginess and complexity, so it would always be worse.
OpenGL program can run natively on any system, DX is Windows-only.
OpenGL have a clear design, DX is confusing.
Etc, add quotes from your favorite GLvsDX holywar.

In any case OGLA is not going anywhere and will come back to Orbiter every now and then.

Ouch. That's in the middle of proverbial nowhere.

-Does it crash when you switch planets?
-Does it crash if you fly around in straight line for some time?
-Does it crash on other planets?
-Do you have Lv9+ textures installed?

-Would it still crash with if you toggle these settings:
--Mipmaps
--Texture compression
--Advanced graphics
--Smooth_textures
?

Pardon Artlav but if OpenGL was supposedly easy to code for why did it it take Valve software over a year to port the source engine to it? And why is it not very popular except when used for PS3 and Wii games?

When I meant other stuff I mean what DX7 cant do. In my opinion one day we have to face facts and port even if it does take a long time to do so. XP is going on the wayside and those who have the cards to make use of more than DX7 effects are likely on Vista or 7 anyway.

As for Linux and OpenGL. Tell me.. Where is the rush of linux developers begging to be a part of OGLA development? Hungry for another game on linux? I honestly thought they would come when you started your project. But alas I have not seen them.

I don't think Artlav ever chose OpenGL because it was easy, probably more because it would be difficult.

OpenGL is more about portability than usability.

As for a DX9 client, who is going to code it?
Artlav is working on new projects and I don't think he wants the trouble
Martin has separated the graphics code and the physics code because his has little time for both.

PC Graphics is hard and there is a real possibility that Orbiter might not even get DX9 for many years.

Since when moving a large project onto a new foundation become easy?

And why is it not very popular except when used for PS3 and Wii games?
Someone just said Valve ported the Source engine onto it. Is that not enough?

There are few, and that's enough. Then again, Orbiter is among the few games worth being ported to a professional OS.

Ouch... when I tried learning OpenGL I quickly let it go and went with DirectX 9 because I found that to be much easier...
Show me a master of all trades and i'll consider that argument. No two people are alike.

The old OGL PS3 "Orange Box" was a dismal failure it is only recently after they did a massive porting project has PS3 opened up again.

DX9 in my opinion is not the best route anymore. That ship has passed. Few with XP are rocking ATI 5X series cards or Nvidia Fermi cards. More than likely Nvidia 7 and ATI 3 and older. The folks working on the DX7 client have pushed it to the limit with these cards anyway in my opinion and adding a pile of shaders on top of that will just cause the cards to fold any any HD resolution. Then again its my opinion and if any serious development is still on the way good on em!

I am glad a few are around. It just gets annoying to hear linux and mac folks talk about how companies are supposedly so evil for not doing their engines in OpenGL and how linux is the future of gaming when they rarely or never show up to assist the projects that even dare to do so.

And I am not trying to take a dump on your project just a bit of ranting on OpenGL mainly.

We should start recruiting them them from other forums.

For frack's sake, maybe I don't have that much time to keep up, huh?
No offense meant! I didn't even know there was a DX10 client in the works, at any phase. :tiphat:

Why the three dots then? Please watch it when you talk with someone with whom you were fiercely discussing before.

Peace!

The three dots at the beginning of a post are my way of indicating something like surprise. There's not much other way to indicate a "pause" in plain-text other than the ellipsis, and I use it pretty much as the textual equivalent of a double-take, sort of like a "wait, what?"

Sorry for the misunderstanding!

I've had quite a few crashes in just a short time of trying to get this to work.

Here's my crash log. Most of them are when I either tried to load a DG-IV or load a Delta-Glider in Cape Canaveral. Once in a while, it will load fine in Cape Canaveral, only there aren't any of the changes from this. Or I'm in a sea of blue with no textures around, and zooming out reveals that the Earth is actually a black hole. And attempting to load a previous simulation results in tv-style static being placed everywhere and the framerate dropping to the speed of a dying cow.

Also, the fact that I have to alt-tab (but not enough to leave the game) in order to get to menus such as the scenario editor is rather annoying.

Artlav: a little question: Can you allocate OGLA on an alternative mirror? I ask this question because it seems that in my country your site is blocked. Every time that i try to access to your site, the request is denied and i have as result a 404 (not available) or a 403 (forbidden) message. :(

What? Blocked? Source Forge? In the same sentence?

If Costa Rica were a country in the middle east I would understand, after all, who knows, some searching could turn up some.. Er, interesting open source projects. But unless your country also blocks youtube and facebook and other such things, I don't see why it would be.

This isn't the SourceForge where beta files of OGLA are located, what's more SourceForge wasn't mentioned in that sentence. Artlav's server where he puts his beta releases of OGLA is located here: http://orbides.1gb.ru/.
