DISCLAIMER: Dwarf Fortress is, by its nature, rather violent. As such, although graphic depictions of violence are limited, descriptions of events in this game can become disturbing for some readers. Continue with caution.

Continuing from this thread.

This is a Dwarf Fortress Succession Game, or Bloodline. Listed players will manage a DF fortress-mode save for one in-game year, then package it up and pass it on to the next player.

*AHEM*

Behold!, fellow brethren of the Mountainhome, the most detailed map of our world, Angstursmata, the Mythical Realm, currently in existence.

Angstursmata.png

I stand before your esteemed persons today to requisition, er, funds for an expedition of sorts. As you all know, we dwarves of Desorîton have delved deep and found much to add to our name and glory. But you must also know that we are only one site, encircled within the centre of our civilisation. You mus--

Er, yes mister Ingishïlun. I'll get on with it. Sorry.

*ahem*

In short, my goal is to gather seven of our comrades in the most ancient Dwarven tradition, and embark on an expedition for the glory of our home. My goal is to the North, beyond the borders of the Dwarven Realm. I mean to establish an outpost, and grow it into a new city for our kind. We've grown comfortable and secure within our natural fortress, the Spike of Cyclones, such tha--

Right, right, sorry. Yes, I asked Mr. Alåthnum. Yes, he was extraordinarily drunk. Yes, I have a wagon. Y-. Oka-. Well. Thank you, Mr. Ingishïlun. I'll get right on that. Y-. Yes, I'll get you a barrel of ale. Now? Of course. We will depart before the year turns. Eh? Who? Uh, right, about that...

Well folks, here's the list of volunteers as it stands:
Code:
Izack: Metalcrafter, Overseer year 1
Rtyh-12: Mason Overseer

Urwumpe: Militia Commander, Overseer
Artlav: Overseer

And here's our embark site:
Embark.png

Looks pretty good from orbit.

**RULES**
1. Participants sign up for a one-game-year turn. Watch your announcements and don't go over your limit!
2. Make your updates interesting! Watch closely what the dwarves are up to, and expand on what you see. Pictures are great, well-written paragraphs are even better! Try and write from a dwarf's perspective. You walk among your subordinates, at least from a narrative perspective.
3. DO NOT PURPOSELY DESTROY THE FORTRESS. If it suffers an obviously avoidable collapse, or is abandoned when there is yet a chance, try reverting the save, or we'll do it for you! Conversely, don't abuse backups of the world (ie don't start over unless you absolutely have to, and if you do, no more than once.)
4. Try to have fun! No one wants to see a lame ending, but no one wants to see a lame fortress either. Prepare the fortress, and then delve deep!

Don't be afraid to sign up, if you have some experience with DF and want to participate! We need:

- Your username to assign to a dwarf of a profession you specify, if we can fit one in.
- The year you'd ideally like to preside over.

I'll be embarking today, and updates will start happening.

Hm. What if i only had experience in the good old days of 0.31?
I heard they added vampires and whatnot since then...

I could play a mad overseer near the end, when noone would loose much fun from me screwing up. :)

As it turns out, "mad" is a job requirement for overseer. ;)

"Urist McDwarfy has been found dead, completely drained of blood!"
"Artlav, Overseer has gone berserk!"

Can I be shoved at the back of the list for Overseer? I would like to have my new computer ready until I am responsible for the fortress, but I am not sure if only three years of fortress are enough until I have it.

Sure.

We've got other new stuff as well. A recent big one is minecarts/rails, which see widespread use in the construction of enormous blunderbusses that disgorge flying battleaxes at the enemy. :D

Alright. Too many people want the last one, though. I'll just leave it ambiguous...we'll get there when we get there.

Much better though, is the capability to PRODUCE hundreds of steel battle axes in rather short time with proper rail work.

It is just a bit annoying that doors cause trouble currently, you need to create scheduled airlocks if you want to avoid flooding hazards.

I still think 7 people are not enough. I propose, just like in the other thread, that we do something like

A
B
A
B
C
D
C
D
E
...

where A, B, C, D, E... are players. This way each person gets to see the state of the fortress after a year of someone else playing, while at the same time, this system doubles the amount of turns we play. Of course, this is just a proposal.

Also, if that's OK, could you please shove me a couple of places forwards? Just if everyone agrees :)

As a side note, it's not the first O-F succession fort - there has been at least one, it's in the related threads below ;)

Looks like a good embark, wonder how fast it'll take them annoying, filthy, goblins to find us... not long I'm guessing.

will we be able to use tilesets and graphic sets?

I love the speech

Yeah, considering the lack of volunteers and fact that everyone wants to start later in the game, this looks a lot better than before. Edit'd.

No one wants to be second, it seems. Is it because of time constraints? Because with your ABAB schedule, you'll be second year as well as fourth.

Do you mean this thread? It doesn't look like it got anywhere...

I'm probably not going to have a lot of free time anytime soon - just started high school - so, I suppose, it doesn't really matter when I get to play. I'll keep the second turn, then :)

Either way, how much time should be the maximum for playing a turn? Anything over a week sounds sensible to me, but there should be a time limit – we don't want to wait months before the current player updates.

No, I meant this thread. Sorry for not posting a link before, I was simply too lazy to do it on a touch keyboard.

I'd say an overseer's session would time out in one week if he doesn't post a reason. Failing that, I think three weeks should be the upper limit before it becomes annoying.

Ah, I didn't see that! Title edited.

Sad news indeed. The animals, particularly the war dogs, were stolen from the kennels last night, leaving none for us. We must press on with what we possess. On a lighter note, I was possessed to name our expeditionary team Gomathshokmug, the Legendary Cheese. An odd name surely, but one does not question divine inspiration.

A Caravan in the Wilderness
Now comes the end of a mild, inconsequential winter. All goes well with the caravan as we continue to make our way far to the bountiful lands in the Northeast. I look forward to the end of our road, and the beginning of a new civilisation. Freakish screams have been heard nightly over the hills in the North. We have decided to turn our camels farther East.

The wagon has broken an axel. The wagoneer, woo482, looked disheartened. I could tell from his face that we would go no further by wheel. I stood up, sighed and examined our surroundings. To the East there is a brook, rife with milkfish. To the West there is a hill, barely more than a lump of loamy sand. The surroundings are potted and guttered with murky pools of smelly, stagnant water. The smell may inter us before a camp can be established. Nevertheless, I drew a deep breath, and in another burst of inspiration gave the name of Tossiddogik, Armorwad to the location. May it bring us glory and riches. The ground is flat but we will erect walls for defence.

For now, however, we strike the earth.

The year is complete; I just need to elaborate/prettify the reports.

Highlights:
- Accidentally the first cavern layer. It's sort of walled off for now; no beasts at any rate
- Urwumpe grappled a capybara by the tongue
- Furnace operator got stabbed in the hand by a kobold. He's in his room with his wife.

The first year is never very interesting. I found tonnes of gold and platinum but no iron ores, so no steel production yet. Hopefully the next overseers will find some...

Platinum and gold? Sounds like the base for a good crafts industry. Sadly it means good weapons will be rare.

Can you somehow present us the character sheets of our dwarfs? Just for knowing the preferences in-game and maybe draw some character portraits.

I've designated a location for the main shaft of Armorwad: A huge spiral stair descending straight into the loamy sand. The miners spent yesterday carving it. Beneath the surface, I have woo482, who has experience with the plow and the seed, establishing a subterranean fungal farm to cultivate our plump helmet spawn. The loam is fertile and I have high hopes for our agriculture.

Wild badger boars roam the plains around us as the mining operations get underway.

Journal entries become more scarce as the seven of us go about the hard work of daily life. The construction of the surface-level woodworking facility is well on its way, as well as the metal and stone crafting areas buried in the limestone.

Lungfish soar through the air as birds. Though they are known for their ability to breathe outside of their pools, this aerial feat is unprecedented. Either we must observe this evolution as it occurs, or else I must fear for my sanity.

Dwarves! Four of our fellows have arrived on foot, exhausted and starving. They tell dreadful tales of dwarves becoming lost in the swamps and sinking into the mire. They numbered seven like us when they departed the Mountainhome. Now they are four. We will give them the best home we can.

Autumn is come. Metalcrafts are underway, including statues to adorn our entrance made of the local platinum. Also, I have begun construction of a defensive wall. The surroundings have proven friendly, the only disturbances being the flying lungfish.

21 Timber

Thief!! A dirty Kobold made off with a, um, palm wheelbarrow today. I called the small mixed militia to arms, but it was already too late. The bastard ran off to the South.
However, the very moment he disappeared over a rise, some merchants arrived, along with our liaison from Tulon Sefol. I shall speak with him presently.

thie1.png

23 Timber

The merchants are certainly a friendly bunch. Their tales contain no tragedy; a welcome change. In the midst of it all we traded the stonecrafts KuatYards has been making for alcohol. We plan to hold a party soon.

I do not regret for a moment my choice to lead this expedition.

25 Timber

The liaison requests of us Crossbows, thread, fish and bracelets. I'm not sure how much of this we can produce at present.

15th Opal, 126

In search of iron ore, I had the miners dig down in search of the proper stone layers. Today they broke into the upper levels of an expansive cavern deep underground. It makes me uneasy, and I wish to block it off, lest my fears become rational.
cavern.png

19 Obsidian

Another thief. He escaped, but took nothing. Something odd happened during the chase: KuatYards, usually a loud one, went totally silent, and ran like a gale for the kobold, despite not wielding a weapon.

On this topic, I deeply regret to report that a year has nearly passed, and we have found no copper or iron ores. Gold and platinum are abundant, however.

21 Obsidian

Urwumpe got in a scuffle with a capybara today. There were no major injuries, but the battle did take an interesting turn at some points.
tongue.PNG

23 Obsidian

Three thieves in short order. Two entered the fortress. The final hid behind the wall. When our dwarves chased the thieves out, he jumped out and stabbed Momuz from behind. Thank the gods he only got him in the hand. As I write this, he is in his room with his wife, Erib. I do hope he returns to health.

1 Hematite

In a year, we 15 dwarves have established a useable, if plain fortress. However, I now step down as leader due to my regrettable failure to discover useful ores of copper, and most importantly iron. The abundant flux mocks me, seemingly.

I have already made arrangements with Rtyh-12, and he has agreed, as head miner, to lead the fortress to earthly riches which must exist below us.

Here is Armorwad:
https://dl.dropbox.com/u/26163846/DF/forum/Armorwad-Year2.zip

All in all, a very plain first year. See the hotkeys regarding areas of the fortress. I'd like the level directly below the below the bedrooms to be the dining halls, social areas, etc. Also hoping to complete that wall around the surface perimeter at some point.

The military currently exists only logically - meagre squads assigned, but no training at present.

Be warned: There is currently no defense against flying monsters from the cavern. I'm not terribly concerned about that, though.

I was just about to make a post telling you that I'm still alive over here!

I know, I haven't posted any update here, I just realized this today. But Armorwad is going alright! I've made some progress on the outside wall, almost finished the dining hall, and I'm also doing some mining, among others. Nothing particularly interesting happened yet, apart from Izack going into a strange mood and making a 96000* platinum chain. The current population is 50-something IIRC. So yeah, Armorwad is pretty much alive! :)

It was the easiest strange mood I ever had... I was worrying that you would die and I couldn't do anything about it, and then I got the announcement that you had begun a misterious construction, taking only a platinum bar. :speakcool:

Edit: Oh, and I've also bought a tiger from the elves :p

Well, I'm a metalsmith with no other skills, so that wasn't as unlikely as it could have been. Problems seem to arise when a migrant arrives with randomised skills, like a bonecarver/tanner to a fortress without a meat industry. You can assign him masonry for a few years, but if he goes into a strange mood he could still demand leather or bones (or the dreaded pond turtle shells.) It might be prudent in the coming years as more strange moods happen to buy random junk off the caravans, just in case.

A tiger? Awesome. I haven't tried training animals in DF before, let's see how this goes. Hopefully another one of opposite gender will come along, and we can have lots of tigerkittens. :)
