So, after having been talked into attending a Dr. Who convention a couple of weeks ago, I decided it's time to immerse myself in this particular subculture, or at least to wade around in it for a while, so I'm binge-watching the "new" series starting from 2005 to the present. Just about done the first season. I watched a few of these at random back when it was on Sci Fi channel (now known as "SyFy") but when it moved off to BBC America I was out of luck. Good show. Maybe someday I'll dive into the vintage 60s-80s episodes.

We are even preparing to host the German BT championship this year... a few months after the official European championship tournament.

Its not dead... it just has become a bit extravagant.

Well, it's dead here. No stores carry it, and anyone who did play at some point seems to have moved on to 40K.

Either that or they've all got Null Signature, and that's why I haven't found them yet.

It seemed to me that tabletop wargaming kind of peaked in the 90s in general, but going from college to the "real" world distorts perspective. It is a fact that there used to be gaming shops in every decent-sized town but in recent years, like hobby shops in general, they seemed to have all dried up. The internet is usually a good thing but not having a retail hobby shop to stop into every now and then kind of sucks.

Agreed - luckily we still have a couple here. It's nice to stop by now and then, except at certain times (Vanguard tournies, pony day, etc.)

No serious hobby shops, though, which is sad. The games store has some models, but very poor selection (nothing 'real' like ships or aircraft), and the prices are a joke. It doesn't seem like many people are into that these days, and those that are have little interest in seeing each other.

It was mostly focused on model railroading but they had lots of raw materials and electronics and stuff for any crazy project you wanted to do. Woods, plastics, wiring, motors, brass tubing, paints, etc.

Gone now. As is Radio Shack, which was kind of in suspended death for years anyway for serious electronics hobbyists, as it turned itself into a cell phone store with cheap toys.

We had one open a few years back in my current city. Citing rising taxes in the city and an environment in the local government that wasn't friendly to their business, they moved to the smaller city 7 miles south, where the chamber of commerce welcomed them with open arms and went out of their way to help them open the store. I was very much into Heroclix back then, but now I no longer have the time to devote to it. In fact I really haven't played much since my divorce 3 years ago. It's a shame really, I have a lot of money in that game, and my collection is still tucked away in one of my closets. But the 'Clix community here is still going strong thankfully, as is the store (there's a 'Clix tournament going on right this very minute as a matter of fact)

They have a really great mix of games and players. Everything from Magic to 40k to many of the newer games being played there on a regular basis, as well as comic book sales.

No Battletech though. I miss playing that one as well, as does the friend who got me started playing it in the first place. We messed around with playing Megamek on my home network for a while, but it just wasn't the same.
