What kind of watches are those?

Some investigation revealed an interesting thing. The top row are what the primary crew have got. They are called "Cosmonavigator", and are the special kind of on-orbit chronograph invented by Cosmonaut Dzhanibekov. The 24-hours dial has 16 coloured sectors, by the number of orbits the station makes every day. Each sector has a colour code for a particular continent or an ocean and is derived by Dzhanibekov from the map grid on the main screen of the Mission Control Centre. Europe, Russia and CIS are marked red, Asia yellow, Africa black, Australia green, South America orange and North America is royal blue. Oceans have sky-blue colour. I can assume that the colour dial can be adjusted to match the current station's anomaly for today. The watches are mechanical and made in Russia.

Here's my best picture of one (sorry for not very good quality):

The backups received Swiss Fortis mechanical watches.

Wow, I'd love to add one of those watches to my collection. (Although the shiny chrome bracelet looks like a cheap Casio)

Cool, nice watches! I found a better picture here:

I am curious what is the purpose of the dark/light semi-circle areas on the main face?

Looks like a simple day/night (A.M./P.M. tilted at right angle) parts of the dial separator.

In addition to the pictures, I can add that Perminov said that Roscosmos will consider regular delaying of transportation of just landed crews to Moscow, giving them a day to recover when they are still in Kazakhstan. Such a request was made by the TMA-15's crew who have landed the past week and was made delay due to bad weather conditions preventing their flight. They actually liked the opportunity not to travel far away and stay in a local hotel instead. This practice was in effect before early 80's, but had later been cancelled.

As example of the case when the crewmember had better stayed rather than departed immediately, he mentioned the "hard" landing of the TMA-11 with the 1st Korean Astronaut Yi So-Yeon aboard: after her having departed to Korea she had to spend quite a long time in hospital. Her problems could have been addressed by our personnel early, had she stayed around for a while.

However, according to the head of Roscosmos, making such a stay a rule will require certain investment in the local infrastructure to provide better accomodations and having an adequate medical equipment in place to safe proof against adverse possibilities, so it's up for discussion yet.

Oh, and, btw, I've shaken hands of every one of them. ;)

My favorite cosmonaut! Did you get to speak to him?

No, Serey Knonstantinovich looked too busy and have been talking to some big bosses all the time. I'm not entirely sure I'll have another opportunity, but you still may send me over something to subscribe for you the next time (or I'll ask someone to).
