Ok, usually I can identify my problems pretty well. This time I'm not quite sure.

For some time now, it happened that my Desktop made some clicking noises with the PC speaker immediately after turning it on. After that would follow the confirmatory beep, followed by the logo of the motherboard on the screen and "press del to enter Bios". So the clicking was really pretty much the first thing the machine did.

The clicking goes click-click, with two clicks in succession, but clearly distinguishable, then a break of about five seconds, then it comes again.

It happened that the bootup was delayed, I.E. instead of the beep and the board logo the clicking would repeat for some time, until finally the computer booted up, almost as if the computer had to try a few times to get its bearings.

Recently, it happened that the computer wouldn't get his bearings at all. Turn off and on again, and he might. The instances where he might rapidly reduced from "every other time" until finally today to "never".

So I started searching for the cause, because so far I was to lazy and I don't use that computer for actual work, so I could live with it.

I started removing component by component, starting with the disks, continuing with Soundcard (yes, I still have a removable soundcard, not because the board is that ancient, but because the card is so good ;) ), followed by the graphics card and finally arriving at RAM.

The symtoms never changed until I removed the RAM. Then I got the expected frantic "got no RAM"-beeping from the board. Removal of the graphics card did NOT prompt the expected beebeep - beebep - beebeep that usually indicates a lacking video card, but this is probably because the board just reverted to the onboard GPU by itself.

So that's the situation: Board does recognise and protest when there's no RAM, but other than that it just goes on clicking with the PC speaker. All fans are running, no problem with power distribution. No additional devices are connected.

So the question essentially is: RAM, board or CPU? which one is most likely the culprit?

(the board is at least 6 years old, which is about the longest time I've ever ran a board, so I would not actually be very surprised if it gave out on me).

EDIT:

I noticed an occasional inconsistency: The board has 2 paired ramslots, both of which are supposed to be occupied. I always get a missing RAM message when slot2 is unoccupied. However, if only slot1 is unoccupied, sometimes I get the beeping, and sometimes not. Sounds like a faulty RAM-socket to me. In that case, good-bye board (and CPU and RAM, since I certainly won't find a board to accommodate the old chip).

open the case look at all the capacitors on top and make sure they r not swollen or leaking/split on top. also take out the power supply,take the cover off and look at those capacitors also. Caps hold electrical charge be carefull with the power supply caps. if you do find bad caps its just a matter of unsoldering them and reading the side of it and replacing it with same one. I have fixed a lot of pc's and monitors like this. http://www.tnpcnewsletter.com/dan/Bulging_Capacitors/ sorry about punctuation I am on cell phone. anyways make sure you take note when unsoldering the polarity don't solder one in backwards. look at the stripe on the side of cap and remember how it goes back in

Nope, no physical damage visible on the board. PSU can't be the problem, power works flawlessly on all devices and fans, it's practically new and high quality.
 
Where does the clicking come from? Are you sure it's the speaker?
Try to locate it, spin your head in three axes to help localize it.

There are basically three things i'm aware of that can click in a PC - the disks, the speaker, and the PSU.

Why do you think that the PSU is not the problem? The fact that fans spin does not indicate anything - fans will spin fine even from a voltage so noisy that the CPU won't be able to tell 1s from 0s.
Try getting a different PSU for a test.
 
If you unplug the speakers, are there still clicks ? If not, it is not the HDD or a moving mechanical part, and more probably an electronic problem (IRQ...). Could be an EM interference, too.
 
if switching psu's don't work or caps are good in old one try clearing the cmos/bios. its usually a jumper on the board somewhere. may have to google make and model of the board. may have to remove the onboard battery on the board also. it couldn't hurt to re-seat it anyways.
edit:
I had an asus board that over time due to heat started to contort and buldge right under the cpu. the result was that over time it seperated the circuit/traces under the cpu. With multi-layered boards now days it made monday's trash pickup a little heavier :-)

My old desktop, which I built, used to do exactly the same thing for the last year that I used it. And the easiest way to reproduce the error on command was to boot it up normally, then after some time, power it off and immediately try to restart it.

My thoughts for years were either a power issue, bad CPU, or bad motherboard. This is what led me to buy new hardware last year.

A month ago I was looking for some files, and decided they must be on the old machine. So, having nothing to lose, I took out all the RAM, and lo and behold, got the error beeps (prior to that, when it was in 'no-boot' mode, it wouldn't even POST). So I deduced I had a bad RAM module. I installed the RAM modules one by one, booting up between each, until eventually all four were installed and the machine was booting up normally, consistently, one-right-after-the-other boots, with no issues. So, perhaps, re-ordering the sticks, or even re-seating one of them, did the trick for me.

But I was never able to figure out exactly where the clicks were coming from...
 
Intermittent booting with seemingly no cause but related slightly to RAM... I've seen this one before... Is your Mother Board made by Gigabyte by chance? I had a similar problem with my Gigabyte Board. I eventually found it to be the intelligent voltage controls in the BIOS not giving the RAM sticks a high enough voltage.

By chance it is... problem is, I don't even get to the BIOS. But I haven't tried a BIOS-flash yet, how could I forget about that.
 
why do you need to flash it? can't you just clear it to revert back to default?
 
The thing to do is A) note the voltage on your RAM sticks (If they have them marked) and B) try all 6 possible permutations of RAM arrangement to see if you can get it to boot:

Congrats, glad you got it working. Failsafe saved my bacon a few times as well, though the last few times even that didn't help.

Mine was a DFI Infinity Ultra II M2 board. Bad, bad board. But man, it was an overclocker's dream.

He, overclocking... I'd need one hell of a cooler to not be forced to slightly underclock my AMD pocessor...
