just discovered this addon (plus the soyuz launcher by Thornton) last night, and it looks fantastic! ive really wanted to find an ISS addon with such detail!

now i just have to learn how to dock properly, because the lack of ISS- Kill-rot) is breaking my previous method, where i eliminate all rotational velocity.
is there a procedural guide for the use of this? and even a brief mission guide for the soyuz/progress missions (where to dock, how long to stay docked for etc) would be appreciated

thanks for the great addon!

is there any chance to dock zvezda with zarya? As i see there are no engines to make [LIN] translation that is why the docking with zarya is impossible

You'll have to translate Zarya with Unity to dock with Zvezda. Hard, but not impossible :tiphat:

Do you mean the ISS keeps rotating prograde? If so, just disable the prograde autopilot, and the CMG will hold the attitude. Guides, no, Wikipedia will have to do :p

and wikipedia will have to do, once ive got the hang of docking the soyuz, its onto using the shuttle fleet to put the ISS together!

wish me luck!

It's a little more subtle than that :p

Thorton actually simulated the CMG by having the ISS actually rotate in a "teleport" way that doesn't need the use of thrusters. That way it doesn't use fuel as in reality and time acceleration is better supported. Also, it is a way to solve the "CoG problem" (with "invisible & near-infinite Isp" thrusters, the CoG will shift as you dock modules - well, in that case the modules are attached, so it doesn't apply - or something massive like a Space Shuttle).

The only limits of the system is that you can notice tiny "jumps", especially at low FPS, and that you can't dock to attached modules docking ports (when you dock, you actually dock with the core module that has its docking ports defined so that the illusion is recreated).

Very, very smart stuff :hail:

manages a manual, visual docking without a hitch, thanks NMolson!

now to try and do it historically, I might even try to put together a short document, showing where to dock for each mission... assuming that i manage to work it out myself :p
i think using some photos of docked craft might help, then i just work out how the ports are mapped (which port is 0, which is 1 etc)

and after having a look at the shuttle fleet missions, i noticed that only one gives RMS rotation figures for automatic RMS movement, is this a problem, since ive never been a fan of using an RMS (not easy :()
and also, how did STS 88 dock the unity to the ISS? i suppose it had to move close to the station first, then move the unity module to dock it with the shuttle, then move the entire stack toward the russian module... then spend a few days connecting all the leads :p

thanks guys, hopefully we'll get some more modern missions from Thornton in the near future (i hope!)

 Except you have to grapple Zarya with the RMS and dock it to Unity. At least historically :shifty:

so the shuttle RMS brought the unity to the shuttle dock, then the Zarya to the unity? seems a bit of a faff... why not just use LIN-up thrust and bang the two together?

Probably because if it didn't work (which it didn't the first attempt) the Zarya would have been sent hurtling off into space. Well, not that dramatic, but you get the idea.;)

A couple shots from SSU.

no new information, but it should be handy if you want to work your way through the russian ISS missions and need some references

and btw, if you see any logical errors (like having two vessels at the same port...) let me know ;)

thanks

The initial problems with Zarya was that the RMS dragged it off the PMA-1 docking mechanism during docking ring retraction. It was solved by releasing the RMS from Zarya and then commanding the docking ring on PMA-1 to retract.

There was never any problems with capture of Zarya. The only problem was that the RMS created a misalignment between the two docking mechanisms as the PMA-1 docking ring was retracted to create a harddock between the two modules.

ok, finished!

Code:
P=Progress
S=Soyuz
undock# sigifies the final undocking of the craft

to use this timeline, pick your launch mission by looking at the top left item
in each block. these blocks are simple a space made before every launch.
then write down the following data, this tells you:
*which order the operations were carried out in for this block
*when you should perform the operation
*how long you have (try to dock before the real astrnoauts did)
 *where to dock each vessel

using this, it saves you having to research each mission before flying it,
because I've done all of this research for you :D

NOTE: if you plan to fly the shuttle missions as well, you will need to find
the dates of their operations yourself, I take no responsibility for history
being re-written :P

next i might put some work in to get the shuttle fleet missions slid into
this, but theres alot of operations there...

anyway, enjoy the free research! ;)

Thornton, is there an expansion pack out there to allow us to fly later missions? i know it would require more meshes for ISS modules/components, but i just need to dock a TMA to the complete ISS :p

thanks man!

Currently all my Orbiter work has been put on hold due the lack of time.

These two are totally unrelated, inability to dock to vessel attached as child is Orbiter issue.

I know, this is a problem for Velcro Rockets too, that extensively uses attachments... I hope it will be fixed in next Orbiter release. ;)

Good luck with RL work !

US ISS A to Z Update

what exactly does this include? would it include the rest of the STS-launched station components? if so, it might be possible to finish off the ISS "storyline" up to the last STS launch, and also put some soyuz/progress launches in there as well!

ill check out the manual for it and see if i can work out if its do-able

thanks man!

It is a totally seperate US ISS section, not compatible with Thornton's US section.
