As there is a thread about Iranian sattelite launches, I thoght a one for generic launches would be useful.

Iran has successfully test fired a improved version of a medium-range missile, state television has said. The Sajjil-2 has a longer range than previously tested missiles which could travel 2,000 km, Iran's Arabic-language television station announced.

The blurb mentions "soo fast it can't be intercepted". I wonder if this is hot air or if it has terminal propulsion (a rocket for the downward leg of the flight)?

Iran launches Kavoshgar 3 rocket to space

http://www.isna.ir/ISNA/NewsView.aspx?ID=News-1486190&Lang=E

TEHRAN (ISNA)-Iranian space scientists launched Kavoshgar 3 (Explorer 3) space rocket for the first time containing a bio-capsule of living creatures.

The launch, made according to accepted rules and standards, has opened a new front for scientific operations on aerospace technology in Iran.

The rocket involves an empirical bio-capsule and flight computer and it is able to send telemetric data and scan and send date simultaneously.

It is also able to send pictures simultaneously to the mobile ground station, control flight computer during the process and display the bio-capsule and its living creatures.

TEHRAN — Iran hailed the successful launch of a home-built satellite on Wednesday amid Western concerns it is using its nuclear and space industries to develop atomic and ballistic weapons.

The Kavoshgar 3 (Explorer) rocket was carrying an "experimental capsule", state-owned Al-Alam television reported.

State television's website said it was carrying "live animals" -- a rat, turtles and worms, the first such experiment by Iran in space technology.

"The capsule has the ability to send back empirical data," the website said.

State television showed footage of the rocket being fired from a desert launchpad leaving behind a thick plume of smoke.

A few minutes later the grainy images showed the capsule detaching from the rocket and spinning in orbit.

Poor critters, especially the rat.

I still can't get it: was it really an orbital or a suborbital launch? What time the launch have been commenced at? If it happened after the Progress, it's got to be an OBJECT 36363.

Suborbital.

The ISNA news agency said the capsule carrying the creatures returned to earth safely after a U-shaped voyage as planned, but it did not elaborate on the condition of the animals.

The Iranians launching anything above 2 feet in the air is sketchy enough...

EDIT: Correct me if I'm wrong... but did he say that the rocket comes back to Earth in a 'U' trajectory? Isn't that called a parabolic/hyperbolic/ballistic trajectory?

"Scientific experiments"? Yeah, I'll believe that when pigs fly. We all know Iran just wants nuclear-capable missiles to threaten their neighbors with, just like North Korea. They couldn't care less about science.

Just a part of the larger movement of nuclear/missile proliferation in the region.

If Iran wants to develop nuclear force, they've got to have both their own engineers and their own scientists. I think the Ayatollahs have come to understanding of this, and also of the simple fact that scientists always want to satisfy their own curiosity at the state's expense. My idea is that they allow them playing to keep the guys happy.

You do realise that Iran and North Korea aren't exactly in the same "region", right?

Unless you define region as "countries we don't like", that is.

I'm not aware of any other countries in either of their respective regions planning anything of the kind, nor am I aware of any internationally recognised evidence that Iran is, in fact, developing either nuclear weapons, nuclear warhead technology or missiles capable of carrying nuclear warheads.

Use of "region" was a mistake, I guess I wrongly extrapolated NK and Iran's moves towards nuclear weapons. I think it does represent a new wave of nuclear proliferation, though.

They're enriching nuclear material on an industrial scale, doing so from "secret" hardened underground facility, developing long-range miss-er, I mean, rockets, and all the while their president is prattling on about how Israel needs to be wiped off the face of the Earth and spewing a bunch of jihad rhetoric. Also, they've been known to directly contribute money to terrorist organizations.

I'm sorry, but when you're carrying on about God telling you to destroy an entire country, I'm not really inclined to believe all that uranium you're enriching is for peaceful purposes only. Would you trust a neighbor who keeps coming home with bags of ammonium nitrate and mixing them with diesel fuel in his back yard while he yells at you over the fence about how God told him to make the movie rental place pay for canceling his account?

I'm willing to take all this with a grain of salt, after all it wasn't that long ago that our president lied to the entire country about Iraq having WMDs and supporting Al Qaida as an excuse to invade, occupy, and steal their oil. But, the parts are all there, the leadership is obviously out of their minds crazy, and they stonewall any kind of (imo, justified) international oversight. What exactly am I supposed to think?

I'm not exactly concerned about them lobbing missiles at us and causing their entire country to get martyred as a result, but I don't want to see Israel or anywhere else reduced to radioactive glass as a result of these people's insanity.

Yeah you are exactly right. Iran is definitely developing nuclear weapons and will use them against Israel if they get the chance.

The threat is very real to Israel. It must destroy Iranian facilities before it is too late. It will happen but they won't get help from America, that's for sure.

The president of Iran is a madman.

I have to (respectfully) disagree with just about 100% of that post. The Iranian President almost certainly is not a madman (less of a madman than Bush is, at any rate) - after all, the real power lies with the Ayatollah, who has the power to dismiss the president.

Now, the fact that neither of them are madmen is very important here. Why? Because the fundamental tenet of all foreign affairs/policy is that the role of a government is to preserve itself/its country - because if you don't fulfill this, you won't have anything else to fulfill. Ahmadinejad knows full well that if he ever uses a nuclear weapon on any country, Iran will most probably be obliterated. And obliteration of your country would be directly contrary to the fundamental tenet of foreign affairs, which I just stated. Hence, it follows that it is not in Iran's best interest to use any nuclear weapons, and thus they are very unlikely to use them, even if they manage to produce any.

You're probably going to come back and say that since, in your opinion, Ahmadinejad's a madman, therefore he's unpredictable and liable to do anything. The only possible reason that I can imagine for your thinking he's a madman is that he said he wanted Israel wiped off the map. So in anticipation of your saying that, I'm going to refer you back to what Ark said (although he may not have meant it this way):

their president is prattling on about how Israel needs to be wiped off the face of the Earth and spewing a bunch of jihad rhetoric

Rhetoric is the key here. As you probably know, public opinion in the Arab world is rather anti-Israel to say the least (and not without good reason, either). If Ahmadinejad wants to stay in power, as all politicians do, he needs to appeal to the public opinion, and thus you should expect him to be sounding off right an left about how evil he thinks America and Israel are, etc etc. And remember: just because he says something doesn't mean he actually means it, or intends to follow through on it.

And I have to agree with 100% of this post :tiphat:. Iran is a very serious threat to Israel, which I consider to be America's greatest ally. We need to support Israel as much as we can. In fact, we should probably give them the 60 Black Hawks and Patriot missiles instead of Taiwan.

Your proposed way of dealing with the problem is a most wrecking for Israel. If they strike first, they will receive all kinds of retaliation. I do care for Israel, because 16% of this strip of land's population are my former compatriots, and because I have friends there. I also believe that Israeli intelligence are quite capable in determining when a missile attack from Iran becomes imminent. They are mature state and they are capable of handling their problems themselves. But when it comes down to international intervention in the region's affairs, the world's nations must do all their best to prevent any possible escalation of conflicts and not help doing things worse.

Perhaps it could be a best interest for the USA to field test parts of their ABM defense technology that work in the terminal phase of a missile's trajectory (such as THAAD). It's their mutual business together with Israeli military. But mounting a pre-emptive strike on Iran would be wrong, unless a 9th Crusade is declared and I missed the news.

I think Israel intelligence is capable of being on top of the situation and can of course do what it must.

I also think that whatever Israel does it gets **** for it and real bad guys are the heroes. But it doesn't matter, every country for themselves and so on...

I hope that nuclear weapons will not be used but situation looks very disturbing.

I don't believe that Iran's space program is aiming for science, it is aiming for capability of delivering nuclear weapons to enemy countries. They are making nuclear fuel and developing rockets. It is not very hard to see their intentions even though the propaganda says other.

Pre-emptive strike is not the answer but IMO situation can lead to that. Tough situation and Israel might do something after all cornering and threats.

HA! It's not like we don't already directly fund Israel in the billions per year. After all, they were supposed to be Bush's fortress in the Middle East.

All I'm saying is that there are greater threats to the U.S. than China attacking Taiwan. But aside from Israel, our own troops could be attacked from Iranian missiles as well.

Why do we need to support Israel? So they can pursue Zionist foreign policy in spite of international law? Or so we can keep hurting our credibility in the region by talking about peace and arming the Israelis to the teeth?

Iran would not use nuclear weapons, because if they did they would be wiped off the face of the Earth. Now, I am not in favor of a nuclear Iran because there is a lot of political instability in the country (which could lead to a massive wave of proliferation to non-state actors), but you do have to recognize that possessing nuclear weapons is one of the best ways to maintain your security.

And why not support Taiwan? They at least have a government that is only interested in shoring up their defense (instead of waging aggressive wars).

Oh, and I'm not denying Israel the legitimate right to defend itself, but expanding settlements into a territory (with your military) that you legally allowed someone else to have is kind of bogus.

So they can pursue Zionist foreign policy in spite of international law?

Considering my ancestral background there, I would say without hesitation: YES!

Iran would not use nuclear weapons, because if they did they would be wiped off the face of the Earth.

Something tells me they would gladly die knowing that if they strike first, and we or Israel counterstike, they have a satisfaction of an accomplished mission.
