What does Mars smell like ?![]()
The Mars 500 experiment simulating a manned flight to the Red Planet will give scientists new insights into unique human abilities, supervisor of the project Alexander Suvorov said.

“The experiment was a success because none of the participants dropped out along the way. They all stayed healthy and…retained their working efficiency throughout the project,” Suvorov said in an exclusive interview wiith RIA Novosti.

“We are certain now that people could make a return trip to Mars without any problems,” the scientist said. “However, an ideal number of crewmembers during a real flight should be four rather than six due to a limited amount of resources, including food supplies, which may be taken aboard.”
Suvorov said the experiment had already brought several unexpected insights into how a human body reacts to stress and prolonged confinement.
“In some tests the participants registered the decrease in metabolic rates, which means that the amount of food supplies taken on a trip [to Mars] could be reduced,” he said.
Other “surprises” included reduced motor performance and increased levels of sleep disorder among the crewmembers.
Suvorov said that despite the success of the experiment, it is too early to consider a real manned flight to Mars in the near future.
“First, we have to develop effective protection from strong radiation, which the crew will face during the trip,” he said.

After being shut away for 520 days in their simulated spacecraft, the six Mars500 ‘marsonauts’ are now taking a well-earned holiday. In between they underwent extensive medical checks, made a high-profile tour and attended a special tweetup in Rome.
Post-flight tours are an integral part of every astronaut mission, and even this simulated Mars voyage had its own: European crewmembers Romain Charles and Diego Urbina enjoyed meeting the press, friends, researchers and fans in three European capitals.
Before arriving in Paris in the first days of December, Romain and Diego met scientists in Munich, following up some of the mission’s German studies.
In contrast to the experiment that took them on the longest-ever space voyage without moving anywhere, they took a car from Munich to Paris – just to have the pleasure of being stuck in traffic jams.
But they arrived in time for the press conference at ESA headquarters on 5 December.

Russia may repeat the Mars-500 experiment simulating a crewed flight to the Red Planet on the International Space Station (ISS), the head of the Russian Space Federal Agency Roscosmos, Vladimir Popovkin said on Thursday
“Mars-500 was a very useful thing in terms of studying people's psychology…We are now seriously considering the possibility of repeating this experiment in space,” Popovkin said in an interview with Ekho Moskvy radio, adding that Moscow is now in talks with NASA and the European Space Agency.

Seventeen months of isolation on a simulated trip to Mars came to an end five months ago. Their mission was over and they breathed fresh air again. What have ESA ‘marsonauts’ Diego Urbina and Romain Charles been doing since they left their ‘spacecraft’?
Mars500’s aim was to prepare for human exploration missions to Mars. Confined in their habitat for 520 days, the six crewmembers studied human behaviour during the lengthy isolation. The experiments focused on their bodies, mental states and performance.
Their isolation ended on 4 November 2011 but Mars500 is not over for Diego and Romain. Most of the experiments they did while ‘travelling’ to Mars are being repeated to compare the results.
