I believe the russians use the train to rollout the laucnhers for a few reasons.
1. Trains are cheaper than specialised, many-ton crawlers. All you need to make is a specialised piece of rolling stock
2. Trains can move faster, meaning that the launcher can be taken back to shelter if it looks likebad weather
3. It's cheaper to build a long thin building than a tall thin one. Anything tall (Such as the VAB and any sort of rocket stack) is more likely to fall over in high wind than if they were on their side.
Also, the orientation of the rocket wouldn't be particularly stressful, it's only slowly transitioning weight to whatever is holding the rocket to the train.
