Actually, it's quite understandable that you didn't know that, given that "desert" in that sense is rather old-fashioned, especially in those areas of the English-speaking world that have deserts (for instance, the US). While I do know that the word used to be used with that meaning, it's not in my vocabulary at all: It would never cross my mind to use it that way and would be most likely to misunderstand it upon hearing it used that way. I would always say "deserted".

Damn. The clutch cable of my car broked as I was ready to get back home, after a very long day of work. The end of it fell on my shoe. Had to walk 6 kilometers by night on a desert road, with some creepy 2-kilometers long ammo factory on my right with dozens of "Military Field - Entrance Prohibited -" to find a subway station that got me back home. That was not fun at all. And no rest tomorrow, I have to get the car repaired.

The odds to guess the PIN number of a millionaire are 1:10,000, the odds to win the lottery are depending on the system a lot higher. German system has 1:139,838,160; American's Mega Millions has 1:175,711,536 and the common 6 out of 49 has 1:13,983,816.
So, let's stop paying for lottery, let's guess PIN numbers! Bill Gates is reserved for me, thanks.

That's like using "Idon'tremember" as a password. Not that that would ever fulfill the standard requirements nowadays, but at least you could honestly tell people what your password is, and they wouldn't believe you.
