Really old story somewhat loosely based on (a sometimes very humorous) old Japanese story about two guys stuck between two warring factions. What set Star Wars apart (I think) was the special effects. A lot of that stuff hadn't been done before, or at least used in that manner. But your right, space opera... Or at least on of the first space westerns to reach such an audience. Flash Gordon comics notwithstanding.

The series evolved, I don't think it was supposed to be taken so seriously. ESB has largely been accepted as the "best" because it took a dark turn. The expanded universe was once considered 'canon' or very near so, is now disregarded, but it had some pretty good (and dark) storylines. At least Grand Admiral Thrawn has appeared in Rebels. That dude is a tactical bad (censored).

At the end of it all, the only one that should know the whole story from end-to-end should be R2D2. TO the best of my knowledge, he's never had his memory wiped.

There's a reason all he ever does is run around screaming.

Considering its 40 year old, its doing well.
I remember it as I was 25 at the time, and working in a new job in London. Went with new friends to see it and enjoyed it. Big screen, as you say good effects for its time. I remember it as being well marketed, but I was too old for its target audience. And I'd seen Start Trek from the beginning...

Finally got to see it. Decided to check out this 4dx thing, which was more distracting than anything else. I hope that particular idea dies in a fire...

I liked the characterisations in the movie a lot (contrary to most people, it seems, but whatever), but it has massive logical problems. The actual plot falls apart in several places even on first glance, and it gets only worse from there. In terms of consistency, this is one of the biggest messes I've seen in a while...

Well I finally got to see it on the sixth attempt (health issues you don't want to know).

On the whole I thought it was an OK movie, some great sequences, some plot problems.

With my strategic hat on, I could see 3-4 plans to save more of the rebels, than the lets put all our people in one ship and run away plan.

Yoda force lightning the tree was cool and important for the longer story I think. Ray taking the books seems important to me for the next Film.

The Casino city plot could have been so much better if instead of bubaling around they actually tried to blend in and get the right guy. or just went and got Maz and sorted her "Labour Dispute" which could have been a better story line.

Ray's character progression was probably the best thing for me in the film. Culminating in the best sequence in the Throne room.

For those who care about such things, the movie is doing exceptionally poorly in China.

[ame="https://twitter.com/weier1231997/status/952547524174168067"]Gavin Feng on Twitter: "China Box Office: Star Wars: The Last Jedi only make $2.46M on the 2nd weekend, droping 91% from the 1st weekend($28.15M). $38.14M 10-day to… https://t.co/2DtkFk05Y4"[/ame]

Well, since China is the real market for films these days, that's kind of a black eye for The Mouse.

China hasn't really ever been big for Star Wars. And despite the poor showing there, I just read another article that stated is just passed 'Beauty and the Beast' to be the #1 worldwide for 2017 and #10 worldwide all time. Still that's a pretty big drop off and does NOT bode well at all for Ep 9.

So I finally got around to watching it. I don't really think it was particularly bad, BUT it really did NOT hold my interest at all. That part in the beginning with the fighter pilot making the 'holding for x' joke did seem a little out of place though. Also not sure how I felt about the WWII style bombers.

As a life long Star Wars fan The Last Jedi, has got the worst story and worst continuity of all the Wars movies, its also a sexist film all the Males characters are either bad guys or idiots to be patronised and the treatment of Luke Skywalker was disgusting a Hero turned into a coward and attempted murderer and the jokes where really pathetic and Rey who I really liked in the Force Awakens becomes a total Mary Sue within days of meeting Finn she has complete control of the Force beats Kylo Renn twice in fights and fires the Falcon's guns like she been doing it for years but the worse thing about the Last Jedi, is the directors attitude to the fans talking down to them and being critical, Him and Kathleen Kennedy are the worse thing to happen to the Franchise she also has a bad attitude to the fans and has an agenda she is enforcing... I'm not excited for the first time for the next Star Wars films and I blame Johnson/Kennedy for that... its a real shame

I hear you. I told a friend of mine that for the first time in my life I probably don't care about the next SW movie.

And I have seen every one of them in the theater since 1977, when I was almost too young to remember it.

Here we are about to cap off the Trilogy of Trilogies and somehow Disney has managed to make a film that is worse than Lucas' prequels. It took a while to sink in, but the more I thought about it, The Last Jedi is one of the worst movies I've ever seen.

Such a sad and insulting end to what could've been a much greater franchise.

Having had another look at it, the thing it reminds me of is procedural generation.

The pieces are there, the components of a good SW film. They have good cinematography and scenes accented in the right way, they patterns of the old trilogy in place, bits of writing that would have been great in the right context.

However, all these pieces, things and patterns are mixed into a mush. Cinematography accents retarded moments, attempts to show strangeness are focused on yuck-inducing scenes, good bits of story are patched together into an incoherent whole, or turned into an absurdity by being placed into the wrong context. The Force is up to 11, the common sense is down to 1.

Everything is out of whack, just like what you would get out of a procedural generation software when you get out of the immediate area around places where the author balanced it, and enter the bizarre rest-of-the-universe.

I wonder how it got made this way...

It's a procedural generator composed of humans, called "committee". It shares the core problem of procedural generators: It has no idea of the wider context of what it's doing.

Maybe this should be its own thread, but I wonder how much the reaction to TLJ had to do with this:

[ame="https://twitter.com/BoxOffice/status/1000396690401132545"]Boxoffice on Twitter: "SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY
$35.631M Friday Estimate (Domestic Opening)

#HanSolo #SoloMovie #StarWars #SoloAStarWarsStory #AStarWarsStory #BoxOffice"[/ame]

That's really low! Especially when you factor in they basically shot the movie twice, this might be the first SW to not even break even!
