As another year draws ominously to a close, I'm beginning to wonder if there will be enough time to finalize a new version before the holidays.

Have no fear: Orbiter 2015 will come, I'm just not sure if it's going to be this year or next.

But in order to see where I stand, here is another poll for the intrepid beta testers (which of course will by now include the entire OF community):

How stable is the latest Orbiter beta in your experience (say, in comparison with the 2010 edition)? To clarify, by stability I mean something like the mean time between "random" crashes, where random refers to things that can't be identified with known problems such as addon incompatibilities, or smashing into a planet at 1e5x time acceleration.

Have you come across any problems that you feel "must" be fixed before a new release can be considered? (Keeping in mind that there will be patches to follow the release that can address less severe problems).

So far it's been pretty stable with the Default DG and Atlantis. The issues I've had have all been with older vessels like the Dragonfly and with 3rd Party addons.

I think the best way to address this would be to seriously cull the current "base" scenarios moving everything that hasn't been updated or tested thoroughly to their own "Depreciated" Scenarios or vessels Folder.

That said I've been working on updating a lot of older vessels including the Dragonfly and my own Apollo addons to use take advantage of the added functionality in the new VESSEL4 spec.

Dragonfly CTD

Dragonfly (all scenarios) crashes to the desktop. This may not be show stopper but it is part of the standard release.

Thanks

I did not check lately, but some time ago many of the scenarios dis not work satisfying.
It would be a pity if any new user could not immediately take a look by "clicking through" the provided scenarios.
The "Welcome" Scenario should run.

Apart from that, the BETA has been quite stable recently.

When it DOES crash, it disables ClearType fonts. That's not a deal-breaker, but it is...annoying.

Which raises a question: how much of a performance hit does ClearType incur on Orbiter these days? Would it be worthwhile to set the default to "don't disable"?

When it DOES crash, it disables ClearType fonts.
That isn't how it's doing it. It disables the ClearType when it launches. When it crashes it simply doesn't re-enable ClearType (because it crashed before executing the code which is re-enabling ClearType).

You can change the settings on the Extra tab either to not disable the ClearType when Orbiter is running, or to force enabling the ClearType at exit (even if it wasn't enabled when Orbiter was launched).

Ah, thank you for that. I looked for an option, but didn't think I'd find it under "performance options"

I get 29FPS with ClearType off, 27 with it on. Not much of a hit, but it's not zero either. Guess I'll just force it on on exit.

Roughly 30fps for me in the inline client (1920x1200): from c. 115fps to 85fps in the '/demo/DG ISS Approach' scenario

Except from a few crashes while changing SOIs, I got no crashes from my play sessions (which are kinda short on the beta, I'd say 40 minutes system time on average)

As a hack amateur at best, I'd say you did a great job in the new beta. I've never had a crash, but I'm not good enough to actually challenge the sim from my point of view.

Looks like I'll never get the HD GWS flying, too high a demand from the high Poly and 2 mgb textures. Single and paired modules seem to work well at 60fps to 80fps, which is how I test them insitu. Don't worry, I'm parallel building the meshes and textures in low to med res. I will get this add on to fly sometime.

Thanks once again for your outstanding sim. It's been wonderful fun!

I can never run the 2016 in my Win 10.
The old 2010 can run with Applocale (my system language is Simp.Chinese).
The 2016 will crash during scenarios loading.

I find it related to Windows Control panel "date, time and numeric format setting".
If the "Format" is Chinese, there will be a CTD.
If the "Format" is English(USA), everything is OK.
