What's wrong with it? Works for me.
Because all the manufacturers are making their monitors "HD standard" by removing vertical pixels from perfectly good monitors.
Compare: 1600*1200 vs 1680*1050, 1920*1200 vs 1920*1080, 1280*800 vs 1280*720
Also, computer monitors have pretty much been stagnating since the whole HD fad started, and now they're merging with TV monitors, and that drives up the prices of normal PC monitors with normal aspect ratios and respectable resolutions.
Progress has basically stopped at 2560*1600. I blame it on the consoles and TV popularising 16:9 and branding criminally low resolutions as "High definition".
