I'm willing to bet big-time, that when the time came you'd back out.
I am 100% certain in myself that I would go on a one way mission to Mars.
I would definitively go trough the training, constantly trying to rationalize my choice, and when the time came to step on the spacecraft and go, I would be there, first in line. With the mission underway, and with me in space, I would be to busy enjoying it and trying out everything I ever imagined doing in space, to think about the one way trip. And once we arrive on Mars, standing on another planet, than the one I was born on, i'd probably cry tears of joy, it would be quite emotional. Then about 3 weeks later, on the surface of Mars, once the reality of the situation settles in, I'd regret it.

Given a chance to go back in time and make the choice again, I would do the same and go again.

Having survived orbit insertion with my sanity intact, I'd likely roll into a shivering ball trying to find the furthest point from a docking port.

You know that in the International Space Station, there is nothing stopping the astronauts/space tourists from completely unlocking the airlocks? You can disengage the clamps, and release the seals, and feel really close to space, closer than being on the space station, or on a shuttle. However, nothing would happen due to one simple genius engineering design, the doors, they open inwards. Against the internal air pressure of the space station. You would need someone a 100 times stronger than Schwarzenegger was, to pull those doors open.

Now, on the space shuttle it is a different story. The man hatch opens to the outside, so if you where to open the locks, you would blow everything, and everyone out to space in a matter of seconds. And this is the reason why they bolt the doors once they get in to orbit. And only the commander has the key.

Now the question in my mind is... what happens when the commander goes crazy?

Of course I would go. Up on the Shuttle, down on the Soyuz. Just a stay in the ISS would be the best.

I certainly would.
There won't be much to fear since i'll know all the potential problems my ship would have, having built it myself. (Being 2 meters tall i can't fit into any of the existing or planned ones, building one would be a necessity. And fun.)

Only problem i foresee is boredom. The excitement would wear off after a few days, and then it's a long couple of weeks to Mars.

Yes! Very much so!

I'd go in a heartbeat! In fact, I'm hoping space tourism will become cheap enough during my lifetime that I'll be able to afford at least a sub-orbital hop, and see the Earth from the outside ;)

Either that, or I become enough of a millionaire to buy my way now...

We'll see what happens first ;)

Cheers

Believe it or not, I'd have to pass up the opportunity to go into space. I have Cystic Fibrosis, I'm on oxygen 24/7, I am easily nauseated, extremely intolerant of g-forces > 1.0 || < 1.0, and I have a chronic, congested cough. I require all kinds of breathing medications throughout the day. The last time I got on a roller coaster (at about age 26), I thought I was going to die. (I mean that literally.) And I am far worse now than I was then.

So, as much as I love space, I'll have to live out my interplanetary fantasies vicariously though Orbiter.

Having said all that, if I were healthy, I would go without hesitation.

This is what statisticians call a "biased sample"

I don't think you're going to get many "No"s on this particular forum. :hailprobe:

Being first one on marswould be the best what could happen for me!!!

may the :probe: help me at this

my pity for that... :(

Right now, I would say no, but answered yes on the poll because I'm sure if the opportunity arose I'd jump right on it.

I'd love to do quick flights. Like, an afternoon at the ISS (that sounds naff...) or a sub-orbital flight.

I'm not sure I could cope with long flights cooped up...

I'm not sure I'd like the g-forces involved - I can't even cope with log flumes at theme parks...

All in all, "yes" in dreams or if offered by someone (rich), probably "no" if I had to steel myself into working up to it!

Yeah, me neither... I can't get used to vertical G forces... especially that weightless feeling...

But even so, I'd put up with it without thinking twice if I got the chance to go up

Cheers

Seriously, why do people have to post polls like these? Now I'm thinking of all the things that I want but can't have again.

Yes/No/Maybe. In some cases I would- gasp- not bother, really.

But standing on the surface of Mars, that'd be fun. Maybe. If I don't go psychotic on the trip out and vent the atmosphere of the transfer vessel into space.

Why not..If you have the Heart of a child.

Hearts of children are easily broken... :(

I would immediately jump at the chance to go to space. Being only 19, I have hopes of one day being able to go into space afford ably. We will see.

I would volunteer to go to the Moon, or even Mars. I've dreamed of setting foot on another world. It would be such a big deal for me I don't know how I'd handle it. It would be my wildest dreams coming true.

No matter the age.. It's always good to dream like one.

Until your dreams get crushed...
