Yeah I didn't care about the project, figured it was relatively safe, but there were a lot of people that complained about it here in Southern Nevada.

Seems to me like Nevada can buy off the President easier than the local area Nuclear power plant can.

nuclear waste is a pickle, it is definetly too early to pass judgement on the mpresident. closing the unconstitutional prisons was a good start. reversing the ban on stem cell research , also good. to make something good out of the Bush aftermath will be next to impossible.

He's doing "feel good" type of projects and is screwing up on the really hard hitting ones so far. I'm not quite sure what fantasy land he lives in, but he needs to wake up soon.

I have never really understood why US can`t reprocess spent fuel like France do all the time. It`s just a huge waste of valuable resource to throw away nuclear fuel after one cycle. About 95 - 98% of energy is still there. Also spent fuel contains some isotopes needed in nuclear medicine and industry.

Maybe he read about the events in Germany in the last 30 years, to think about the plans.

Officially we don't have a nuclear waste dump. A few weeks ago, we found out, that an experimental one was called full operational waste dump in internal communications (Asse). This one is, according to real mining experts, close to a collapse. Another mine in the same mountains already collapsed in 1912, forming a huge crater lake. The nuclear waste dump has water flowing into it already since 1967, with the flow rates increasing. This coupled with many small and large Earthquakes at critical layers of the waste dump.

Remember: In terms of nuclear waste, you talk about geological timescales. And in geological timescales, even the hardest rock behaves like a dynamic liquid.

What makes the thing individually worse, is the aspect, that it is not known what really is stored there. It was already found out, that the material was not correctly labeled, and instead of making sure, the waste can be removed, like planned for a experimental waste dump, they later just threw the waste into it, regardless what it was and if the barrels get damaged. It is known now that even highly radioactive (and toxic) plutonium waste is now stored there.

If Yucca Mountain has even slightly the same history of fraud, crimes and possible corruption, it is good to close it.

Well, nuclear power plants can't recycle their waste or dispose of it or even transport it so they each need to build additional swimming pools to store it.

Its just idiotic.

No. It isn't too early.

Well, you are wrong. In other countries, you have 100 days. Obama is just 52 days in office now. I know it feels like an eternity.

George W Bush got actually 2000 days, before people felt it was fair to rate his performance.

Afghanistan? WTF!?!
He's a populist politician. He bends with the public opinion wind. Its easier to maintain the status quo that makes a group of noisy supporter happy at the cost of a few industrialists (who didn't support him anyway). Who cares if the problem is a ticking time bomb. There is always the next administration to worry about it.

A reprocessing plant would be a great infrastructure project, but the problem is that whenever the Nuclear word is brought up, the environmentalists have a knee-jerk opposition to it that is even more irrational than the Greens in Europe.

...at the cost of a few industrialists...

...who are responsible for the mess and now cry for tax payers money, after they exploited almost any legal and illegal loophole to reduce their own taxes.

You can't sing the tune of individual responsibility if it comes to customers and employees, and then dislike it, if people expect you to be responsible for your own actions. That is bigot.

Also don't listen to a special Nobel Prize winner named Paul Krugman, who currently appears in any media complaining about the world not bailing out enough. He fears his own Nobel awarded theory of New Trade being put to the test, if people are not protectionist enough. And the bailouts are always a protectionist act.

The governments don't know, which companies are healthy and which are not. They can't know it. They either have to bailout a whole industry, or they risk disturbing the market.

The government has not the task for fixing the damage of bad management. The government has to step in, if the damage caused by bad management threatens the infrastructure. Finance is one very important infrastructure. Building SUVs is not. But guess WHO deserves to pay the bill of mismanagement. Of course, in the reality, the small tax payer will pay it. No criminal will betray another. But the managers of all companies which are now practically bankrupt deserve to pay the bill. They have become rich with money that did not exist, and the tax payer should now make it existant.

And the world is full of bad management thanks to the insanity of the last decades. Just look at the Forbes list of billionaires . All people on the list lost about 25% of their wealth. All people? No. A few more conservative investors actually made profit in the same time. You can be sure, they will also loose money this year. But sure not as much as the many others. They calculated, instead of listening to the Adrenaline.

Suggesting arbitrary numbers is counterproductive. I'd rather keep a running evaluation of performance. Having an opinion doesn't mean it can't be changed when more info comes up.

and the 2000 day thing is crock. He was being evaluated daily just like everyone else.

You've got to be kidding on the last part. Come'on people, you voted for change, and that is about all you'll have left in your wallet once he is done.

Nuclear plants should have their own on site processing... they are not looking at the whole picture and not completing their business and it has become too easy to dump it in a politically hot center...

Politically driven moot-point-issues...

Which brings me to the off-topic section of this post.

[off-topic]
it is amazing how well structured the "republican rhetoric" is.
They are accusing the new President with exactly the tactics the Neo-Cons employ.
It really is a genial thing they do.

They used 911 to scare us and mold our mass consciousness to fear terror, then Afghanistan, then Al Qaeda, and then finally Iraq. All by the power of repetition and forced association.
There by spent (inexplicably) 700+billion in a war that was unrelated.
They had previously allowed Enron (party contributors) to rip off millions upon millions from the west of USA, but every one, instead, got focused on "Wold Crossing" ... They destroyed the constitution with the obscene "patriot Act..." which if you read it you will know it is obscene.
Disposed of the Geneva conventions etc...
And then they ran up a deficit that made history...
and bugged out leaving the world economy in ruins and tethering on the verge of mass war.

Now a new guy comes in with "idealism" like JFK, or Dr. King... or that other misfit Lincoln... And Limbaugh (how novel) rallies up the reps by attaching all the labels they themselves carry, across the alley.

Not new, not seamless... very expected.

---Politics!---

If you believe in just words you are an idiot - no-matter whose words you buy into... but if you look just at the facts,,,

and yes I expect the Neo-cons to be annoyed.

I enjoy it.
