Maybe he read about the events in Germany in the last 30 years, to think about the plans.
Officially we don't have a nuclear waste dump. A few weeks ago, we found out, that an experimental one was called full operational waste dump in internal communications (Asse). This one is, according to real mining experts, close to a collapse. Another mine in the same mountains already collapsed in 1912, forming a huge crater lake. The nuclear waste dump has water flowing into it already since 1967, with the flow rates increasing. This coupled with many small and large Earthquakes at critical layers of the waste dump.
Remember: In terms of nuclear waste, you talk about geological timescales. And in geological timescales, even the hardest rock behaves like a dynamic liquid.
What makes the thing individually worse, is the aspect, that it is not known what really is stored there. It was already found out, that the material was not correctly labeled, and instead of making sure, the waste can be removed, like planned for a experimental waste dump, they later just threw the waste into it, regardless what it was and if the barrels get damaged. It is known now that even highly radioactive (and toxic) plutonium waste is now stored there.
If Yucca Mountain has even slightly the same history of fraud, crimes and possible corruption, it is good to close it.
