I just flew out to Seattle and I'm at a hotel next to the Boeing Center. The 747 Dreamlifter just flew in and they're unloading it now! I also saw five or six 787s from ANA over here too. The room I'm in actually overlooks the entire airfield and is right next to the main runway. Awesome for any aviation fan.

To top it off, it's about 60 degrees (F) here, compared to Atlanta's 95-105 degree weather.

Too not further derail the topic:

Rjumin doesn't count! He is a Russian tiger who can take a lot more radiation, alcohol etc. than normal people

I remember a documentary about the last days of Mir. One NASA astronaut told how funny it was to see this big man, with his big hands, trying to get into his space suit, which already was a custom build.

Mobile Suit Ryumin!

Actually, the topic is random, so to not derail it, something random should be added.

So you also can't hover because you don't believe in gravity, or erase apollo from history by not believing into moon landings.

I wonder why there isn't more research into the effects of reduced gravity instead of microgravity. A station/craft that's spun to 1/10 of Earth's gravity would induce fewer problems with tidal forces, and also reduce the problems that exist in microgravity.

To get back to the topic, a ferris-wheel was erected here earlier today. The crane that was used had the inscription "Mine is 32 meters. How long is yours?"

And apparently you can't walk on hot coals just because you don't believe they'll burn you...

This beats any vulgar MBT verse. :p

I just got my electricity and district heating bill for this year... generally nothing fancy. But one statistic made me blink:

I should pay 60 Euro because I consumed too much compared to my monthly rates. Still OK, it was a hard winter and I prefer too warm over too cold.

I should pay 60 Euro because I consumed approximately 200 Euro more for heating (and saved about 150 Euro in electricity).

What really gets funny there: I reached a value of 232 kWh/(m²a), calculated by the kWh heating I consumed according to the bill, which puts me below the average in Germany. If I would correct the bill also for the fact that I paid from November to June, mostly in the colder months, I would actually reach extremely low values for such an apartment.

But I consumed more than estimated? For what do I actually pay here?

As I see that some have talked about it after my message in the chatbox, here's a screenshot from my flight (EDDK-ENGM):

BTW, the onboard magazine said that the satellites are orbiting at 22000 km. Sounds like a mistake, I thought those are in GSO?

22000km is approximately the height of the GPS satellites, but actually they are a bit lower than that...

EDIT: 600th post?

Bungling through a quiz:

(4 points) The height of a baseball above the ground, in feet, is given by the function:

[math]h(t)=-16t^2+60t+3[/math]
where t is the number of seconds after the ball made contact with the bat. Using the function, what is the height of the ball 4 seconds after contact with the bat (use correct units)? What does the answer mean, given the context of the problem?

My answer:

[math] h(t)=-16t^2+60t+3 [/math][math] t=4 [/math][math] h(4)=-16(4)^2+60(4)+3 [/math][math] -16(4)^2=-256 [/math][math] 60(4)=240 [/math]
-256+240+3 = -13 feet.

"The ball was hit so hard, it was drilled through the grass and into the foundation. Either that, or the formula is incorrect.

Furthermore, doing [math]16(4)^2+60(4)+3[/math] yields an answer of 499 feet, which even Mighty Casey couldn't accomplish.

-- Or Babe Ruth, for that matter. To each, his own."

(Corollary: I did speak with my instructor about my findings, just to prove I wasn't making fun of the quiz, and to further show the work and the logic of the findings. The thing I missed was the time span -- 4 seconds since impact; what goes up must eventually come back down, so -13 feet was intended to be interpreted as "ball is at ground level." He did give me credit for that answer, and the legwork involved to get said answer.)

Of course, the argument given in that comic is valid enough in Newtonian mechanics, but not in General Relativity, which states that both "real" gravity on the surface of a planet and "illusory" centrifugal gravity are each specific cases of the law of inertia, and thus that neither one is any more "real" or "illusory" than the other.

Cue debate over whether that means both are "real" or both are "illusory"...

That said: how are you liking the current arc in Schlock? I'm a bit afraid that Howard's painting himself into a corner and it's going to end with yet another Petey-ex-machina.

I just saw the 747 Dreamlifter taxi and take off right near by, and I think the hotel is just barely still standing!
