So the time has come at long last for me to replace my computer.

Of course, like an idiot, I waited years to do this, being comfortable with the one I have, until something starts to fail, leading me to a mad rush to find a replacement before this one goes toes-up completely.

I kind of hate how dependent I've become on having access to a working computer, for so many things. Gone are the days when I was satisfied with snail mail and a few channels on TV...

The display is acting weird, and searching leads me to believe my graphics hardware is failing. It's fine if it's been off for a few hours, but after it's on for a while I get red horizontal lines and then flickering, which gets worse. Virus scans turn up negative, further leading me to think it's hardware. And this thing is waaaaaaay beyond warranty.

So I picked up a new one and now have to go through the uncomfortable process of learning to use a new operating system, because the Smart People who make this stuff love to change it to make it more "user friendly". Also, I have a lot of stuff to transfer from my backup hard drive.

At least I was smart enough to back stuff up....back for more whining later after I struggle for a while.

Too late if you didn't already ditch your old one, but if still have it, just open it up and give it a good cleaning out with an air duster and check that the fan works. It sounds like something is overheating.

Yeah, I've thought of that. I also notice if I turn the screen brightness down it helps a bit. Not in a hurry to ditch my old one; once I get the new one up and running I will attempt to keep the old one as a backup.

Really strange event. A burnt "smart" car has been found - in the hardly accessible Oytal in 1400 meters altitude, near Oberstdorf, Bavaria. With the license plates of a stolen VW Golf.

According to the police, the car has caught fire at the place it was found - far away from the next paved road and the only partially paved road has so big holes in it, that it is highly doubtful the car got there that way. The next building is the Käseralp, which is only inhabited during the summer. About a kilometer south is the Rauheck, one of the highest mountains in this part of the Allgäu mountains and the border to Austria.

Ok, first post from the new computer. Like an idiot, I never wrote down my router password so I had to reset it. Then go through all the set up stuff, yada yada yada...guess I'll have to figure out how to set up my printer again, too.

I'm trying to get used to this new MS browser. It looks cool but simple things like going back more than one page are now either impossible or hidden somewhere. I need to figure out my anti-virus situation. This thing comes loaded with MacAfee LiveSafe which costs more and supposedly "protects your identity". The usual free trial BS. I will probably keep what I have on my old machine. We'll see.

I have to try and see what happens when I plug in my external hard drive to restore my old files to this new operating system. Should be fun.

I run a four-pronged approach to computer defense. Avast! antivirus, Malwarebytes antimalware, Super Antispyware, and Glary Utilities. it's been rock solid so far.

I left Windows on my home computers because I realized my stomach was getting into a knot every time an "upgrade" loomed at work. When you have to work to just get back to your former level of productivity, you have to wonder what the point of upgrading was. I still have to put up with it at work to a degree - getting RPis for my labs has been very liberating. I really don't need that OS churn and lock-in nonsense at home. I don't gain anything by it, so I'm not doing it.

I use Linux Mint on my netbook (my only real daily-use computer right now). Works a treat. The only thing that hurts is that I can no longer run Orbiter on it as there apparently isn't any driver support for the on chip graphics on the Atom processor for Linux. I don't really game so otherwise it has been a good shift and hassle free.

I have an old Toshiba laptop (weighs about 47 lbs) that has been through several winters in my shed that still has XP on it which I fire up when I just have to get some time in on Orbiter. It's airgapped, but I don't really care what happens to it anyway. If it bursts into flames, or gets run over by my lawnmower - fine, whatever.

I love having EOL equipment - it's electric courage! All those crazy performance hacks you wouldn't dream of doing on your new shiny? Not a problem! Get your screwdrivers and soldering irons and dremel tools and go to it! I don't get my money's worth unless the computer melts/burns/explodes. Unbelievably I haven't had a major fiery hardware failure yet.

Interesting detail about some German space history:

The third German astronaut was a human smuggler during his time at university. The in-built MS Defender works good enough for live protection and due to it not being the free version of an otherwise paid product it'll also never nag about that. Malwarebytes for the occasional manual check. The best defense is always common sense and caution: the only times I had to deal with malware were due to very stupid mistakes such as not paying enough attention to programs that ask to be installed along with some freeware.

The former German chancellor Helmut Schmidt has died at the old age of 96 years... which means that these are now all news from Germany for a while. In his case likely for a good reason, because he really shaped the present in various ways... but still. He had a lot too much self-esteem for the sensitive minds around here. And he was the only person who had been allowed to smoke in TV in the last years. :lol:

Maybe he is also worth to be celebrated for being the only German who ever commanded US, British and Dutsch soldiers at the same time.

First try with Fallout 4 - playing it with the gamepad is cruel. Died at level 1. I think I will try with classic mouse and keyboard tomorrow.
