So I successfully recovered most of my files from my external HD to my new computer.

Unfortunately, it also tried to import my browser bookmarks and somehow none of them point to anything.

I guess I'll have to do that manually somehow. Likely the old-fashioned way: export them from my old computer and import the file on my new one after transferring it.

My new computer is an HP Envy with a 17.3" touchpanel display. It's pretty impressive. I didn't think I wanted a touch panel, but it's one of those things you get spoiled on real fast. The display makes it big, but it's not like I am one of those parasitic laptop hobos that drags his machine to coffee shops to leech off the free wifi. Watching video on it is really nice.

I had to make sure I got an optical (DVD) drive with this machine. It really irritates me when they decide we don't need things like that on newer machines. An optical drive is an absolute requirement for me for a number of reasons.

Also, this machine came loaded with some video/photo processing software, good video and lots of memory, and 4 USB ports, which gave it the edge over the others I looked at.

I didn't think I wanted a touch panel, but it's one of those things you get spoiled on real fast.

I had one of those for a few years, and I used the touchscreen maybe 4 or 5 times... A mouse is just way more comfortable when the thing is standing in front of you.

For example for scrolling on e.g. a website or document it's nice to have a touch screen, especially for smaller laptops/devices. I was skeptical at first, but now I find myself poking at non-touch laptops from time to time.

Yes, you are right: on a desktop or large laptop with mouse it makes little sense.

In my case to be specific I have a 11" tablet/laptop hybrid (base detaches and the "computer-bits" lie in the screen) which I often use without a mouse. On such a form factor the touchpad on the keyboard is by necessity small, so to scroll it's comfortable to let the hand rest on the side of the monitor and use the thumb to scroll.

I have no idea if its a good description but I swear that its comfortable.

Ok, that is an altogether different matter. Mine was a usual 13" laptop.

You are too humane in Russia. In Germany, the German army used to have preference over you, once you turned 18, when we still enforced the draft here. In my case, the army even got me before I finished school. Once I had my final exams done, I had to report for duty on the next basic training... well, I volunteered anyway, so it wasn't really that bad. But the Abitur ball wasn't really fun, on the next morning 6 AM, we had to be back at the army base - and it was really recommended to be sober, because we had our athletics check on that Sunday.

Most accept their grades and will own to their own deficiencies, but we always have a percentage of students who have "delusions of adequacy". Many of these students have greatly overinflated egos, are convinced of their own brilliance, and believe that their multiple failing grades are a problem with the system, not with themselves. Their mommies and daddies have told them they are special, so it must be true! Some of their egos pop in spectacular fashion after failing several courses and we do occasionally need to worry about suicides.

I have to say though: Sometimes it is really a problem with the system. But you are right, those people whose talents really collide with the system are rarely the people who will discuss their grades with you.

Progress on my new computer:

All my recovered files were inaccessible. No idea how to change the permissions, but a message to Western Digital (who made my external HD) pointed me in the right direction. So ends that particular crisis.

But I still don't know how to fix the browser bookmark thing. I suspect it's the same issue. Whatever file the bookmarks are stored in needs to have the "owner" changed, but I don't know where to look. Hopefully WD will answer that, too.

And then there's good old Microsoft and their "Improved" office BS, which is now apparently a subscription service. I'm going to try to load my copy of Office2003, which reportedly works with Win 10.

I have to figure out how to access my old email address book, too. That must be some kind of backup file as well, I'm guessing.
