Favorite Space Movie?

The Right Stuff with Apollo 13 a very close second place.

Isn't it sad that of all the momentous events of history that been the subject of movies there hasn't been even one "big time" movie solely dedicated to Apollo 11 and mans first landing on another celestial object? I guess the upcoming movie on Armstrong's life will sort of serve the purpose.

The problem with Apollo 11 is that it lacks drama in the movie sense - there's no mileage in an almost flawless success story. Don't get your hopes up too high on the Armstrong biopic - Hollywood is likely to turn that into slush. Would they ever be able to capture Armstrong's weird anti-charisma?

I completely dislike armagedon. If I ever meet the guy who wrote the script might probably be the day I go to jail for doing something you're not allowed to do to other people...

I'm torn about contact... Most of the movie is nice, but the ending is so cheesy it hurts!

I do like mission to mars, in contrary to red planet. There's a lot o unlogical things in MtM, but it has a very nice overall feel...

I grew up with the old Star Wars, so I like them...

I was completely shocked by the new Star Wars, so I don't like them...

I do like Dark Star alot, and watch it every now and then.

Starship Troopers is great too, I have to read the book one day for finding out what Heinlein actually wanted to say, since Verhoven turned it into a complete Parody of american society and military.

I love independance day. I don't know why exactly. It's just... cool. And it doesn't take itsel seriously which seperates it from Armageddon.

I'm reviewing all the 4 alien movies every now and then when my Wive's not home (she can't look movies like that, she's in thoughts and terrors for days to come if she does...)

Darkstar is great, A lot of the team behind darkstar went on to make Alien, which is probably my favourite space movie. Anything past Alien 3 in the franchise really isn't worth bothering with though. The recent starwars films are better when taken as a whole - if you can stomach that much Jar Jar, i've actually started to like them a bit more these days but their flaws are all too noticable.

oh, and no love for 2010? Don't think anyones mentioned that so far.

Actually the old Trilogy was pretty good in Star Wars,
Episode 3, was good aswell, Episodes I and II sucked.
Episode I would have been good without Jar-Jar
Episode II would have been good if just, er, Less Romantic
Only way Episode III would have been better if Darth Vader had not said "NOOOO!!" otherwise else Episode III was pretty good.

Yeah, the only really tense scene would be the landing sequence--first the radar computer overloading, then finding that the landing site is unusable and having to manually move to another, with the fuel about to run out, and landing with about fifteen seconds of fuel left.

That's five minutes of drama (already well captured in a Nat Geo documentary) against two hours of anticharismatic Armstrong awkwardness.

Though he was perhaps their greatest, most professional and coolest test pilot astronaut, he wouldn't even make the first cut today in the NASA selection board. "Who's that guy that can't even put a whole sentence together in front of the cameras without pulling a face like a guy sucking lemons?" [Public Affairs department veto follows, Armstrong out on his ass, I mean donkey]...

Turn Apollo 11 into a trilogy. Trilogies always sell.

Episode 1: The fellow ship
Episode 2: The two astronauts
Episode 3: The return of the LM.

I hate to burst your glory but this isnt a addon. Im making a movie of it. thats why I made this. I use this to test particle effects and lens flare and other effects such as refelctions and glare. now you mentoin it. I might make a addon of it. unless someone is willing to program it of course because I have no damn clue on programming. I wish I did

Apollo 13 of course is a classic... I also love Red Planet and all Star-Wars movies. What about Space Cowboys with Clint Eastwood? Pretty cool I thought... I also like the movie Sphere, even though its not really in space at all, it does feature space-like content ie the ship etc. Galaxy Quest is always a good choice too!

Has anyone seen Gattaca? Probably my favorite movie..

My favourite would have to be Terry Gilliam's Brazil. It isn't a "Space" movie, but it is Sci-Fi in the sense that Orwell's 1984 or Kafka's Der Prozess is - and I just saw that it is listed on Rotton Tomatoes' Sci-Fi list, so I thought it was legitimate to include it here.

Edit: According to wikipedia, the US version had a lot of scenes cut because they were thought too "unsettling" for American audiences. I don't know how much impact this had on the plot, but if you think about getting a DVD (and aren't easily unsettled ) it may be worth looking for an uncut version.

I really wish they would have stayed truer to the book. A much better story with WAY better tech! Powered Jump Armour, better weapons than just an amped up slug thrower, and each trooper drops individually from the dropship and then is recovered by a landing craft.

You'll most definitely want to check out Roughnecks: Starship Troopers Chronicles! Much truer to the novel than the Verhoeven film (even though he did produce the series).
