I've been working extended hours since last July. Not only am I ready for 2016 to be over with, but I don't harbor many good feelings towards 2015 either.

The paychecks are nice though, but useless if I don't have time to enjoy it.

Bud Spencer and Schimanski dead ... growing up really sucks.

Anybody else here who already hates 2016?

Weather-wise, it's a freak year. Two weeks ago we had to most awesome/ terrifying outbreak of supercell in the last decade or more. 4 days in which pretty much every storm that developed (and there were a lot) turned into a supercell, some going the hook echo way and the others becoming bow echoes.

European storm forecast issued code 3 (the highest) for 5 days in a row, which was unprecedented. Germany and the Benelux had some nice supercells too a few days ago, AFAIK.

A few days behind on the thread. This:

But if you work in a place where everyone can put their pride on the shelf and riff off each other, each teaching the other what they know, that's a pretty awesome place to be.

This is exactly where I am in my current role. I couldn't ask to be on a better team of application developers. We all have areas we're good at, things we have experience and strength in that the others don't. And none of us is ever too busy to answer a question or put another set of eyes on a problem for the others. It really allows us to not only grow as a team, but grow our individual skills as well. If you find this kind of 'melding of the minds,' this cohesion in the workplace, in any field, hold onto it as long as you can. It's rare, and it is something to be thankful for.

Well, our storm chasers freaked out a bit.
We had a german chase team (Erzgebirge/Vogtland, IIRC) chasing around here when we had the supercells. Most of our chasers went out on their own. One of our best panicked when he saw what was coming and bailed , fearing hail damage to the car. But then again, these were big hail producers (15 cm diameter measured , possible record for these parts)

This scares me.

I thought it was a mistake, but I could check with the weather in my city, and looked at the camera live from the ISS HDEV Payload.

POMPANO BEACH, Fla. --

A flood at the Florida Humane Society in Pompano Beach, Florida, led to cats being evacuated, but it was not because of a natural disaster.

A faucet in a cat room of the shelter had been turned on -- by one of the shelter cats.

Florida Humane Society President Carol Ebert told she thought a pipe had burst when she got a call at 7:15 a.m. Thursday about the flooding.

"The countertops are ruined, the walls are ruined," Ebert told WPLG. "We had lots of damage with food and storage we had in the hallway, (including) cat litter."

The water ran for nearly 17 hours. The cats avoided the water by climbing high in their beds.

Whether just one cat or multiple cats are responsible isn't clear, but Ebert said many cats had to be moved out of the shelter. Most are in foster homes, but some still need to be placed.

WPLG said the shelter needs at least $5,000 to repair the shelter, including replacing walls and cabinets that need to be torn down due to mold, and food and litter that was destroyed by the flooding.

Wife is off for a bicycling trip through next Tuesday. I'm done for the semester and I have the house to myself again for five whole days!

It sounds really lame, and some of the younger folks may not get it, but it is *really* nice to sit in total silence and look out the window while drinking my morning coffee and be able to daydream and let the mind wander where it likes. That seems to be the fix where my mind has the opportunity to examine thoughts and file them in the appropriate place (or chuck most of them in the trash can).

When the sun sets a bit I'll go pick some raspberries out of our patch, and maybe take the canoe out for a spin on the reservoir this evening. It's nice to have nothing to do and all the time in the world to do it.

Congratulations to Portugal after game vs. Poland.

1:1 after full time and extra time.

5:4 in penalties.

Good luck in semi-finals.

How long did Poland last, two weeks? And they fell to Portugal? Sounds like someone turned off Historical AI Focuses.

Portugal is now the first team ever to reach a semifinal without winning a game in regular time.

Today is the 100th anniversary of the beginning of the Battle of the Somme, a 141 day long battle with over one million deaths and no winner.

If anybody ever had a doubt.

We can't lose against Italy today. We have David Hasselhoff on our side.

David Hasselhoff...har.har.har...Funniest I've heard today

N.

But think of the Curse!

Don't mention the curse. We have spent the past week removing all black cats, ladders and mirrors from the German team.

But Müller has to be considered cursed... one of the best shots of the game defended by the best defensive acrobatics of the game.

As a half-German, half-Italian, I just hope it won't end in penalties.
