Spacecraft personifications

Notice the resolutions...1440x900 and 1366x768.

Also, maybe I should post this here...I don't think this is a cross-post...

So, there was light.

By looking through this thread it looks like a few of the earlier posters didn't understand what this is about. http://ostan-collections.net/wiki/ look at those that's the kind of thing I think they're going for in this thread. I might make my own later but right now I have no paper.

Darren

PS: Dibs on Shutttle-A

Edit: If only there was a good way to do anime/manga style in GIMP.

Yes! Someone who totally gets it!

They ARE very much like OS-tan- it seems I caved a little bit to some of the complainers when I edited the original post, but the intent is just as you say.
I found it amazing how likable Emuii-tan became.

Anyway, if you can't finish in Gimp, just post the sketch (if there is one). I'd be surprised if anyone managed to do something like that in Gimp, actually. Thanks to this thread, the people who can't do the imagining can do the drawing, and the people who can't do the drawing can do the imagining!

As to personifying spacecraft, I have some opinions on the DGIV. She should intensely care for the crew by worrying for the cabin conditions, like if is too hot or cold and if the oxygen percentage is alright. And of course she is willing to blow herself half up to (hopefully) give the crew a chance to survive, unlike R2(XR2 that is). Being on the ball enough(or however autopilots affect personality) to aid her captain to orbit and bring him back down if his reentry skills are up to par should be part of how she acts; I don't do anthropomorphizing enough() to really be sure as how to do that.
Speaking of OS-tans, this description kind of makes me think of DGIV being like 2k-tan. Does this sound correct?
The DGIV bluescreen failure either validates (obviously Windows) or denies (2k should be more reliable). :hmm:

Also, Gemini is not forgotten. I will not pass up an opportunity to draw a spacecraft in Sukumizu.

Let's dance together! We should start a group 'The -tans'.

I would sketch some but I have no paper (fail) and the driver for my printer doesn't seem to work with 7 so I can't scan it and my cameras all suck.

Darren

PS: -tan on!

Edit: Anybody see the connection between Pixia and anime/manga? I can't. Anyway here is my Shuttle A-tan made in GIMP because I can't use Pixia.

PPS: This is my first real attempt at any sort of anime/manga drawing ever.

Edit2: When I can get my hands on some paper and get my printer to work with 7 I'll redo it on paper, it should turn out better.

Sorry for dp but my Edit button doesn't seem to be working.
Can anybody show me to a good tutorial for inking/shading anime style in GIMP? :tiphat:

Darren

I really have no idea, but my guess is that there's no tutorial because GIMP just isn't good for that.

As for my previous coloured pics, I just kind of winged it in Photoshop, and it took forever. I don't know how to use Pixia- I can now vector logos for Cucumber Pepsi, but under normal circumstances, with line art, I just can't.

We need BlueRose! She will return some day, as the prophesy says! :hail::probe:

Uh oh...it's THIS again... :hide:
Watch this and be happy.
Is it actually so rare that you got totally excited? Or is it me that forgot that this is OF not Animesuki :uhh:
You answered yourself then, right?
Also because avatar is Madobe Nanami.
BTW, this is pretty much the best any 擬人化/personification can get, so we should aspire towards this kind of quality. I could not stop smiling! :)

Anyway, here is my Shuttle-A:

attachment.php

It would look better with colour...the shaded parts are mostly gray...
I couldn't stand her not having something on her head (as some may understand), so I added the radar thing. Also, replaced extra fuel tanks with aux pods. And some other stuff.

 Cheers to collaboration!

Lol "You forgot to put the screw in." Yeah Nanami is basically the tops when it comes to personification. If you can get one as good as her then you're a god. That looks nice I see that you stuck with my idea of having the fuel tanks on the forearms.

Darren

Prepare for more collab.

  • Enjoys floating and low gravity
  • Likes to jump around
  • Loves the Moon
  • Doesn't like to lift heavy loads
  • Prefers to stay closer to the ground than others
Hows that so far?

Darren

This thread is awesome. Its good the shuttle A is getting some love. Since I am in the 'cannot draw' category, I'll do some more imaging to make up for it.

Sukumizu Gemini?:hmm: You could give her a Ultraman style mask, only it looks like the Gemini spacecraft from head on instead of Ultraman. Cause after some long hard thought, there isn't much from the actual ship that could identify it(like wings, tanks, other thingys), besides the large letters "UNITED STATES" painted on:lol:.

Anyway since the last comment on personifying Gemini was bare on personality, here goes some ideas:
1.She is insecure about her accomplishments because of all the praise and attention that Apollo gets, so she overcompensates. Generally acts like the mistreated ace of the space program.
2.(This ties into No.1) Fully believes and will tell anybody in earshot; that she could have done everything Apollo did, cheaper and faster too. Also has similar ideas about how America's space station projects turned out, kinda like her saying " I could have done it! If only they let me do it! Stupid NASA!" about Skylab and even into the shuttle era.
3. Despite the chip on her shoulder, she is happy to teach others about rendezvous, docking, EVAs and other techniques she helped develop. After all, she should recognize that although she can't go out again, its what she learned and discovered that maybe more important than what she actually did in space. Maybe. It doesn't stop her from throwing in what she did, and still could do yet, in her lessons.

While I can stand by the above as being good, I thought up a joke thing that I don't think should be included. Basically its that Gemini wanted to be more developed into a bigger, more capable craft, like her predecessor Mercury was developed into her. So she goes about thinking shes 'underdeveloped'. Which feeds into her feelings over not being allowed to grow into something badass. Though I really don't know if this is a good idea. I'm a hack not a genius, so I'll put this before others to judge.

This bothered me.

QUOTE FAIL. A random train must have struck the name from my head as I was quoting.
I did the (brace)QUOTE=(name)(brace) thing in the quick reply box, to avoid loading the page again.
Looks like I fail at that. Now editing...

Anyway, thanks for those personality things, and I'll get to that.
This is what I like to see!

A bit off-topic but do you just use normal grey lead pencils?

Darren

Edit: I was thinking for the shuttle A perhaps a helmet resembling the cockpit? I was going to do this but it is beyond my capabilities.

Pencils don't matter much to me, since I'll end up erasing if I decide to ink. But yeah, I just draw with the same #2 mechanical pencils that I use for writing.
Sometimes if the lighting isn't good, I press too hard, but I still don't have a real need for anything harder than #2.

A helmet doesn't really sound cute at all. That's an overriding factor, you know. ;)
I guess maybe if she didn't actually wear it...my idea of the G42 has a welding mask-shaped visor that she isn't usually seen wearing.

I posted that last group of ramblings while tired and I think it shows. I am redoing it now but I'm a bit of an revisionist freak, so don't get surprised if I come back after that with even more. While still on Gemini, I was thinking about her having a 'evil' twin. Not really evil though, just based off of the attempted Air Force version of Gemini('Blue' Gemini). It came of of the fact the Gemini constellation is of twins. So if Gemini is the twins than perhaps the Spacecraft Gemini should have a twin. Coming up with a way to tell them apart is difficult for me to imagine though. If you use Sukumizu then you have to figure out which one gets the normal(blue) color and then what color the other will have(BTW I really like the sukimizu idea, easier to visualize the vague idea about one piece swimsuits I posted about earlier). A possible way to do the colors i to have Blue Gemini wear blue and and normal Gemini wear black like how the capsule looked in real life. Though that seems confusing to me... this more of a problem for later, as I'm not finished with Gemini to make a second one;). At any rate i should have more about Gemini later.

If her eyes look out the cockpit windows, it would be funny to show her doing a :P face. Though to pull it off would be difficult, and not really cute, unless a wizard does it.

You could try giving her one of those ^^ faces under the helmet. Or something like that, I dunno.

Aha! I thought of twins like some depictions of the DS (Yes, there are Nintendo DS personifications).
Telling them apart, that's easy- on Gemini it says "United States" over a US flag, and on Blue Gemini it would say "US Air Force" over a USAF roundel. ;) And I could give them slightly different faces and maybe hairstyles.
450px-Blue_Gemini_USAF.jpg

I also might imagine Winged Gemini, as Gemini with bird wings (or something) copy-pasted on.

Anyway, I actually already have pics for Gemini, so expect those soon (soon, like, a day).

It'd look cute if you had the hair coming out the bottom.

Darren

Edit: Yeah Gemini twins, it could work, maybe hair colours representing the respective ship colours.
