So what's one to do with a 3D printer and confined at home?

Well, convert an old nitro RC car to run on a quadcopter motor made for 11-or-so inch props.

The original RC car:

Electric motor:

Since I'm using an ESC more suited for airplanes/quadcopters (and possibly also due to the type of motor used) it cannot move reliably at too low speeds, so for now I've decided to keep the centrifugal clutch.

Which, since both the nitro engine and the brushless motor have an M6-threaded output shaft, fits perefectly and is a convenient way to mount the output gear anyway:

First run on a bench:

Finally, first roll on it's own power:

Things to improve:
  • Clutch bites at too high RPM (approx. 1/2 throttle) - should be possible to remove the closing spring on the clutch since the motor doesn't have to "idle"
  • Add Arduino controller to account for the need to retain the throttle/brake servo to actuate the mechanical brake
  • Most likely add control from bluetooth via phone since I do not want to dedicate a remote/buy a receiver to this "concept"
  • Lower the shift point of the two-gear transmission to enable a shift to second gear?

So, I was playing around with talktotransformer.com/ and I fed it the prompt DROP TABLE , this is it's completion.
Code:
DROP TABLE testtable;

CREATE TABLE benchmark (

a int ,

a_txt int ,

a_category int ,

a_score int ,

b int ,

b_txt int ,

b_category int

);

CREATE UNIQUE INDEX b_c on benchmark (

id int NOT NULL PRIMARY KEY ,

test

);

CREATE TABLE bisected (

g int NOT NULL,

i int NOT NULL

);

INSERT INTO bisected VALUES (1, 0);

INSERT INTO bisected VALUES (2, 0);

INSERT INTO bis

Artificial...what?

After I read the first two lines, I thought it was a misquoted version of Warriors of the World by Manowar! :lol:

Also, you were fortunate. I just started a typical diary entry of one sentence, then the thing went on and spat out *porn*. I'm not even joking! :rofl:

So, the conversion is now I believe 80% complete:

  • Taped breadboard and taped Arduino Uno --> Arduino Pro Mini which actually fits the existing control electronics box
  • Printed battery support

Control board:

Battery support:
attachment.php

Semi-complete package:
attachment.php

Possible improvements:
  • It might make sense to move the battery support, currently attached where the old fuel tank would have been, a bit back to interfere a bit less with the bodyshell
  • Some sort of arming system would be nice, especially in case of broken RC link
  • Need to print a support for the low-battery beeper which connects to the balance leads
  • Control via touch-screen is...not so easy as I hoped

As mentioned, had to print a new version of the battery support:

A small support for the low-battery beeper:

And a test drive, after the last few days of (welcome) rain:

Just heard an interesting history lesson, about CAS aircraft, which also mentioned why Germany did not buy the A-10, despite being offered it. One popular explanation mentioned technical reasons like the availability of ammunition or the US department of state that also blocked sales of the aircraft to South Korea and Thailand. But in this case, another aspect was mentioned that likely backfired back then and can be verified:

The US company Fairchild, in a strong blindness to history or German culture, hired the former Luftwaffe pilot and later Neonazi activist Rudel to advertise the plane here... :facepalm: While he had many fans among the later German Luftwaffe, as some scandals showed, he was persona non grata in German politics...

In this case, they maybe had the best CAS plane, but picked the worst possible salesman for this country...

Trying my hand at NASCAR paint schemes again. The hood would be left white, and that’s where the NOAA meatball would be.

It's funny you should mention LEGO, because I just came here to say that my wife has found a new name for them.
She calls them "Tiny, tiny :censored:" now! :lol: I guess there's no point in pitching that to LEGOs marketing department...

Re. the LEGO post#25814 above.

I wonder why ESA went with the LEGO company rather that the plastic kit makers I remember from childhood, Airfix, Frog, and the others I can't remember?

By reputation, the only thing worse than stepping on a lego is stepping on a D4, AKA "caltrop".

Maybe because well, LEGO is the more successful one? Also Frog is gone and Airfix got revived...

Indeed. Wonder if Revell is still going.
Sure I saw a model of a Saturn V on here sometime.

Still around under new ownership. Also they are now a German company, after the German branch was under a different owner as the US one for some years after 2006, now both are united again under the same investor.

The Hobbico bankruptcy also killed a few UK brands.

Thanks Urwumpe.

I must of built several dozen if not hundreds of mostly Airfix aircraft.
Our local model-shop would occasionally get American imports, and these were usually very good.

Remember one manufacturer that had the stand as part of the North pole rather than the usual V shape.

I am not sure, if I understand this correctly - which stand?

Also, I recommend looking at the Tamiya models.... great stuff, though the quality can be better sometimes.
